X11 and/or XWindows?

I'm not terribly familiar with how it all works but I'd like to explore XWindow connections using a 68k or PPC Mac as the client. I figure it's one way to the box to use on modern computers. Some of my school's software uses X and I believe I could use it to connect to MATLAB as well.

I've seen this on the Garden (haven't had time to play with though):

Is that the only answer, or are there other ways to do this from beige OSs?

My university uses an Ancient version of Cadence Viruoso (5.x.x?) and for the shit sake of entertainment I'd love to execute my lab report screen shots on one of my old Macs. It's a joke only I would get, but with them using software this old the joke is on me to begin with...

Hi senatorgronk

Of the X window clients for 68k & classic PPC, I recommend that you play with MacX 2.0. This is what I use now & prefer, Its Apple developed software, too. Prior to this, I used eXodus.

The screenshots on both pages are mine. MacX 2.0 on 68k Mac OS 7.6.1 and eXodus on 68k SSW 7.1.1 (both under emulation on Basilisk II).

Well, I answered my own question after more digging. These did not come up in my original searches a while back when I posted this question (pretty sure I used the same strings too, but hey...).

I found the following solutions:

MacX - http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/macx-20
MI/X - http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mix-68k-ppc-x-window-server
eXodus II http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/exodusii-70

I might have had a bootleg of exodus II at some point, sounds very familiar. But in the 80s/90s I didn't know what UNIX was, other than the incredibly uninteresting VAX terminals I saw at The University on my way to the tiny Mac lab where the laser printer was kept.

Haven't had time to test them out, but wanted to help anyone that might find my post instead of these solutions…

Weird. Didn't see MikeTomTom's response until just now. Thanks, MTT! Wish I'd seen your response before...
