What to do with those broken download links ?!?!?!

I have discovered that there is a possibility to download files from MG, even when the download links are broken, or at least the following procedure worked on one file I had problems with (World War 6). Here's the procedure I came up with to solve this:

1. Log in to your MG account and go to the page of the file you want to download, but where the download link is broken.
2. Select "edit this page" (somewhere in the page)
3. Find the link to the file in the edit page screen (scroll down a little, it's near the top)
4. Here you can click (or right click) the link (a download dialogue will appear) and download the file directly, or you can copy the filename only, and follow the rest of the procedure
5. Go back to the broken download link on the main page (go out of edit page mode)
6. Click the broken link again
7. Paste the filename you just copied into the last part of the broken link in the address field in your browser (just replace the filename and leave the path alone. You will see that the filenames are different)
8. Press enter, and a download dialogue will appear, enabling you to download the file you want.

Feel free to comment on my post. This might have been solved before, but I haven't checked the forum for a solution, I just figured it out because I got a little annoyed at the constant broken links.

This is how we get all new files. Steps 4-8 are unnecessary though. Just click the file in the edit page and it'll download Smile

Well I'm not surprised that this has been discovered a long time ago (but more surprised that a sticky post in the forum hasn't been made). Would the error in the links have anything to do with using special characters in the filenames (there was f. ex. an "_" in the filename of the file I had to deal with yesterday?

With some broken links, however, this does not work, eg CADMover 4.

@PowerBook,

I think the XML used to hold the databsae of download links only has space for 1000 entries and this was passed a long time ago. Most in the first half of the alphabet are fine, those in the back end are more likely to need the trick.

@xy,
It looks like the PHP (or maybe other server-side scripting language) file upload "feature" used to ensure filename uniqueness has caught this one. Try http://s3.amazonaws.com/macgarden/CADMOVERr_4.0_0.sit
I recognise the extra "_0" from PHP - when you prompt someone to upload a file, they specify a filename (and a path) and it is uploaded. If the filename is not going to be unique, the file is renamed (usually with "_0" appended, or "_1", etc).
Have a look at http://s3.amazonaws.com/macgarden/ to see what I mean about 1,000 entries in the XML database and see which files will work, and presume all the others will not.

The xml at s3.amazonaws.com is incomplete.

That said, if you do download something large from amazon AWS, please upload it to a file-hosting service. S3 is expensive.

Thaks for this tip. There was one app(http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/icontrol) that I couldn't get for ages.

Downloads from here are usually no problem once you realise why and how. However the anti-spam trigger is really giving me a hard time today and for no good reason.
