Valve's STEAM coming to Mac?

Here's a fun post over at MacRumors about Valve's "Steam" game distribution service maybe coming to OS X:

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/02/26/valves-steam-heading-to-the-mac/

That would certainly help bring back more old Mac games into the commercial market. Steam sells a ton of old titles (and cheaply). The LucasArts adventures are insanely popular over there. I'm sure that a Mac version of Steam would include those right away.

Would be nice to set buy links from here then. Smile

That said, maybe a Mac version of Steam would not include those. I sort of assumed that Steam used "Scummvm" for the Lucas games, but it turns out they do NOT. The games were ported, somehow. And, it seems, they only use DOSBOX for certain ID games.

I assumed that Steam for Mac would use DOSBOX and SCUMMVM for the games, but maybe they are opposed to using those sorts of emulators? Maybe they will stick to serving up new games only?

... or they use Cider to port their current catalogue to Mac...

That would be nice.

The key thing is breaking down some barriers between platforms, using Cider or DOSBOX or whatever.

Of course, I'm sure that the emergence of STEAM on the Mac will be a lot less cool than I think it will be. Sad

So just because they found a few icons in the Steam GUI folder they're going to assume that Valve will make Steam available on the Mac? That's ridiculous. Gabe Newell tried to work with Apple but they didn't cooperate. I believe Newell said that he also had no plans of releasing Half-Life 2 for the Mac, which we can easily assume that he has no plans to put Steam on the Mac either.

I don't believe we'll ever see Steam on Mac. Instead I'm more willing to believe that Apple would come up with something similiar ... in fact, I wouldn't be suprised if they'd work on it right now.

as Bolkonskij says; there are already quite a few ports to the iPhone/iPod of classic titles and we all know were to get those. The logic step from this is the iSlate and then…

Now how do they know if it really was Valve who sent them those images? Even if it was Valve, well, you know Valve, always joking around. It could all just be a bluff. My argument is the following.

There are a number a factors, one could assume that a Mac user would want things like the game Armed Assault 2 after downloading Steam, now of course ARMA 2 is not available on the Mac OS so after realizing this, Mac users would immediately abandon Steam for it would be quite useless. Now Steam currently sells over one thousand games, now could you see Valve trying to port all of those games to the Macintosh platform?

There are some PERFECT Cider ports currently available (most of them unofficial), but the technology has proved that a PERFECT port from PC to Mac (with select titles) can take place. This will only be on Intel Macs with ATI/NVIDIA hardware. This can only be good news for all involved...

Amazing news, I wouldn't have it expected, especially since Apple usually is so keen on having everything under it's control. Well, let's look forward to some good new games for our Macs Smile

watchsmart, your username is only half right.

If you look at the leaked images (series of 6), there is a push coming on the Mac (Macs just went over 10% of all PC's in USA). Mac users will eat up PC games, which could equal a perpetual 4 or 5% increase in sales. Mac users also pay more for the same items as PC users, so Steam will probably charge them more for the priviledge.

Unless this is released on April 1, I am going to believe it with all my heart!

It turns out that w/o steam there would be no new Mac games ever:

Because of Steam they thinking about porting to Mac, but without Steam they never thought of...

That does it - last reason not to switch has been met (and possibly bettered).

Next computer will be a real Mac, with a hefty graphics card Laughing out loud

OOh yeah, some primo titles there, Half-Life series (I assume that includes Half-Life Source), Portal 1 & 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 - they will all be included in my collection (I have the PC versions of most of them, so hopefully I can play them free of charge? maybe not)

They have a video of Steam on the Mac - http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/21/steam-on-mac-video-leaked-looks-like-s...

Looks like they'll struggle to make their April deadline Smile

No games in the list (only local games to add)... a bit disappointing.
