Titanium Powerbook G4 External Disk Startup?

I have one of these machines that needs its internal disk massaged with Norton Utilities. But of course, Norton won't repair the System Disk or any disk that holds the app itself.

So I copied the System Folder to an external Firewire disk and rebooted holding the Option key down so that Open Firmware would let me pick the Firewire disk as the startup device.

I was able to select the Firewire disk and the system began to start up.

But a few seconds into the startup, the computer restarted on its own and the Firewire disk was no longer selectable as a startup disk.

How do I solve this problem and get an environment that is Norton Utilities friendly?

Download and burn a copy of

Do not use Norton if you are running OSX on your Powerbook.
It will corrupt your drive.
Use TechTool Pro instead.
