The Classic Mac Zine

A few days ago, I wrote what I called "The Classic Mac 'Zine". It was about eight pages and had reviews of a game, a few book reviews, and other information. However, I realized that it would be difficult.

For one, I didn't want to distribute exclusively through PDF, at least, if I did you would have to specifically request it (I planned to only put the first page online).

I wanted to do the "Photocopy-and-mail" method, but that does get expensive now.

Then, I considered putting out a by-mail CD-ROM (okay, CD-R). Said CD-R would be try to be compatible with most Macs (including Classic ones) and include shareware, freeware, and PD (not full software, though). It would also include other stuff from all over the Internet.

Finally, I thought I should just focus on the Reviews. It would be easiest and most useful.

What do you think?

I'd prefer something I can read online over lunch. I seriously doubt anyone would pay you, especially for paper copies and discs. You'd have to do it as a labor of love, and hope for a few pennies in ad revenue.

Reviews are good. Maybe you can start a thread here on MG, under General Discussion, and then continually update-edit the first post of the thread as you go along. This would also allow for people to comment on the content they're reading. Just a thought...

Yeah, it wouldn't be for pay. That's why I decided against Xeroxing pages. Discs are relatively cheap, though...

why not upload it as a zipped iso and have people pass it around, then? Smile

I love the idea of the mac zine. Background stories, reviews, ... that would be cool! Smile

Would prefer a pdf though. That would be most comfortable to me and you can easily distribute it worldwide, whereas it costs money to burn and ship discs.

OK, here's the first issue.

When Issue 2 comes around, this issue will be much harder to get (details in Issue 2), so grab it while you can!

EDIT: This is no longer available. Please see Issue 2.

Any questions, comments, or submissions? I have my email in there, and I haven't been getting anything.

I read it; I liked it:)

Now for comments...
1) Need some graphics. Although it's nice to keep older computers in mind, my PowerMac G3 zips through all but the most flashy PDFs with ease. Maybe you want to keep it text only, which is arguably a noble thing, but you should at least go for some font size and face differentiation (i.e. titles not the same as body, etc.)
2) The cover seemed sort of garbled; that may have been a layout error, but table of contents was difficult to quickly understand. Also, maybe put the table of contents on its own page, with a full page cover (maybe with a picture... Smile
3) Only go for print if you make people pay for it. I would be willing to pay for a stamp plus 5c per sheet (so about 90c), but most people won't; I wouldn't want you to get tired of the enterprise because you were losing money from the mailing portion. PDF is probably the way to go though, and you might want to get a small website (look at http://www.300baudmagazine.com/, it's an amature magazine for overall retrocomputing [generally pre-mac stuff]).

Overall, great start! I might try to write and submit an article. I would definitely be interested in a subscription.

Thanks! I'll be starting to write the Classic Mac Zine Issue 2, adding some new stuff, maybe pictures. "Subscriptions" are available. Just send an email to the email listed in the Classic Mac Zine, and you'll receive an issue one day before it appears on this website.

Print copies are available on request, as well.

I second what Northcott wrote, a few pics inside would be cool as well as using different types of fonts etc.

Good job. I like the reviews, which are helpful for finding other website like this or books I missed out on. Many of these books can be found for literally pennies + S/H used on Amazon/Half.com.

Wow! I looked at it and it looks pretty. But it could use a cover page (with images). The cover page could be cut out of the print edition and just be in the PDF. Anyway, I'd be happy to help in any way that i can. I've written a review of a game and i am in the process of writing an article.
Great Job and keep up the good work Smile .

I enjoyed both issues, Temporary Joe. Since you're serious about this, you may want to consider creating your own icon for The Classic Mac Zine, maybe even trademarking the name.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the comments! I was getting a bit disheartened and considering ending it, finding a new editor, or major changes.

That won't happen (thankfully). However, I do want to add content to my website (Temporary Joe's Mac Gallery) and I don't want to cannibalize it, which is why I need external content.

As for adding a cover, I can't. I don't have a lot of good graphic abilities or applications, and I'd rather have no cover than a shoddy one.

Addendum:

We are looking for a submission regarding "My Macs" and what have you. Anything is accepted.

Would you accept submissions for covers? I could do one (I'd use quark and illustrator). Tongue

Sure, just be sure to clarify if you want your real name to be used or not. Banned fonts include Papyrus and Comic Sans MS. Submitting doesn't mean usage, though. I request that the name The Classic Mac Zine be on the cover in non-antialiased Chicago (for the first issue, I typed it, for the second, I used mini vMac to type it, then resized it).

In addition to subscribers, contributors get a copy of that issue. There will also be a longer time between email copies and free web copies, so if you want an advance copy, subscribe or something!

Sounds great Temp Joe -- I would like to see some nice guides to using older systems with modern networking/printing etc. That is a hot topic...

I am currently looking for an "About My Macs" submission from somebody. You know, tell us about the Macs you've used growing up, and possibly other computers too!

Great! I've written an outline of the current issue, and I'm still working on new columns to put in. Two columns will be introduced, one will be renamed and revamped, and one will be removed entirely.

Hey Joe: Sorry I didn't get in any submission for issue 3, but I've been terribly busy the last couple of weeks, and it looks like I'll be pretty busy the next couple as well. Is there any way you could sort of standardize a release schedule? Like once a month or faithfully bi-weekly?

It's monthly. Another issue will come in mid-December.

I'm still debating on the content for the fourth, though...

A Mac e-Zine sounds pretty cool. I've seen other sites try this sort of thing and PDFs always work the best.

I might be able to find some time to write an article by mid-month. I was thinking about a column idea, "GetNextEvent()--Macintosh Development" and have articles about classic mac development tools and concepts.

@Temporary Joe: I've sent you an e-mail via MacGarden some weeks ago, however, it does not seem like I'm included in the subcription list? Didn't get any issue nor confirmation? Did my e-mail get lost?

@Bolkonskij, ooh, that's right. It's sent off-site to, uh, Mailinator, which is not my real email.

The truth is, I was signed up to MacGarden via earthboundman@gmail.com (which is what you should send it too) under a different name (PS3D, I think?), except I forgot my password. When I tried to request a new email, it always ended up in my spam folder, a few days late.

Desperate (this was the days where you had to sign into MacGarden to download), I signed up for Mailinator (I used to use BugMeNot, which had removed its free email service): a password-free, no-questions-asked mail service. Intending to get PS3D back, I signed up for Mac Garden under a name I thought up off the top of my head: "Temporary Joe".

The name stuck.

I don't want to spoil Issue 4 (coming mid-December!) but I've got sections that will be very likely left out if I don't get submissions.

Bolkonskij, I didn't get your submission (but I did get Northcott's) yet. Here's what's to be left out if I don't get article submissions.

MacOddities (any strange peripheral or "special" Mac)
HyperZone (anything HyperCard)
Mac Website Review (make sure it hasn't been done yet)
Classic Mac Book Review

This issue will premier three new columns, however. You can actually see what they are if you decode this:

ø¬∂ µåç≤ ˜´∑ π®ø∫¬´µß
†ˆ∂∫ˆ†ß
∑ˆ˚ˆ ˙ˆß†ø®¥

Issue 5 will be delayed until December 25th, with some Christmassy embellishments.

The four columns are scheduled to be left off as I have gotten no submissions.

I must be missing something - do I need to subscribe?

I have tried editing the existing link, but I can only get two issues that way Smile

If you could post the complete series so far, I would love to read them...

The original gimmick was the fact that subscribers would get a steady stream of updates, but given recent developments and my burnout in approaching CMZ, I'll just give links (they are all Dropbox links).

I incorrectly stated I was working on Issue 5, I was working on 4. Issue 3's link should still work.

Here's 1&2 for those who missed it.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8243916/Issue%201n2.zip

In Issue 3 I mentioned I was looking for a new editor. I just really can't think of any more content like I used to, and I don't enjoy it as much as I did a few years ago.

Oh no! I almost misattributed "About My Macs" as Northcott's, not MacMeister's. Sorry about that (to both of you).

Anyway, project is back on track today, but the point still stands: I'm content bankrupt and kind of burned out.

NICE!
I´m really interested, since you and a lot of people here have to remember
that some of us did not live through those ages of the Mac Classic,
so we missed out a lot,
I vaguely remember reading some Mac mags back when I used to live back in the States,
and now,
it would be fun and entertaining reading reviews, stories and stuff about those years
and if you have the time to do that on a universal-reading-format
that would be cool.

I'm very sorry for the delays.

No articles have been submitted (apart from an "About My Macs" column) but much of the issue is complete (minor formatting problems) except for a few things.

I did kind of get burned out...but if anyone wants to step up and take the place of Editor, please contact me at earthboundman@gmail.com to get the in-progress Issue 4, a few guidelines, and the subscriber information.
