Retro Mac Web Directory - anyone in for a retro side project?

Hey everyone,

remember the days before Google took over? When we would search in web catalogues like Yahoo for hand-picked websites about a topic? And how often we would end up with something related, yet completly different that would broaden our knowledge?

Just hanging around the catalogue and browsing was a fun thing to do (if just it would not have been so expensive Smile ) and we aim to recreate some of that feeling.

There's a prototype up on my side for illustrating the idea. We're using HTML 3.2 here - the idea is to make this a catalogue of websites you can visiting on your actual Quadra 800. Netscape 4.x is the standard, so if it looks good on it, it is a candidate for the directory.

So, talked this one over with fogwraith and we're basically looking for someone who would be interested in maintaining the list as I lack the time. The project will be hosted at the MacGarden and we'll use a subdomain for that, so you have zero costs. All you need is

- a ftp software like Transmit
- an editor for the HTML like BBedit
- a graphics editor for scaling / saving screen shots

This is very simple HTML. You do not need to know programming. It could be a first step for you though. I'm ready to help out with any questions.

This is something you can use your old machine for apart from games and have some fun with it again! I've been creating the prototype on my PowerMac 6100 / 66. It also does not require a certain schedule, so you are free to work on it whenever you have time to spare.

So let us know what ya'll think and if you'd be interested in maintaining the page?

This is a great project idea! I only have about 4 or 5 hours a month I could commit, but if that is enough (or no one else with more time can step forward) I would be glad to work on it.

Great stuff! I think it's very important to prove people there are still sites tailor-made for their old machine (actually we're a community about Macs, but it's the same when it comes to the people into Win9x, and website like win3x.org for example work perfectly with old IE.).
I hope someone has the dedication to help you.

(btw: I had made a 90s Mac-Themed website a few months ago, but it never went live because I lacked the time to finish it... sadly aha)

@systemseven - awesome, the hours should be perfectly fine. What's the best way to get in touch with you? I'd like to get you going asap.

@Ataru29 - holiday season is just a few weeks ahead and systemseven's effort will make sure your page will be found. So go ahead and finish it up Smile
