[Request Ended] QuarkXpress version 6 updaters

I've been trying to locate updates for QuarkXpress 6.0 Passport and have hit a brick wall in my attempts to track down updates 6.1, 6.5, & 6.52.

These were free updates but Quark has removed all links to updates below version 7.0 and my last hope, the Web Archive, has no copies available, either. These updates need to be installed in sequential order, i.e.; 6.1 before 6.5, etc.

  • Last known DL file-names:
    Version File Size Status
    6.1 qxpress61updater.hqx 80.5 MB   <-- Located
    6.5 qxpress65updater.hqx 154 MB   <-- Located
    6.52 quarkxpress652updater_mac.dmg 20.7 MB   <-- Located

[Update!] OK, we have located the QXP update files to 6.5 and 6.52! Thanks to fogWraith.

[Update 2] We now have the elusive QXP 6.1 update file with thanks to Mark (MHarrison) for providing both 6.1 and 6.5 updates in the form of Mac/Win hybrid CD images.

[Update 3] With a full install CD version of QXP 6.1 and by using an appropriate serial, QXP 6.x installs without requiring online activation. It's now possible to upgrade QXP to version 6.5.2 without using the full retail version of QXP 6.0 or needing the 6.1 updater to get there.

The full install Mac/Win CD copy of QXP 6.1 has been added to the QXP 6 page (DL#4).

[Update 4] - blackholemac has provided the final piece of the puzzle - the full retail copy of QXP 6.0 has been added to the QXP 6 page (DL#3). This officially ends this request. Thanks!

Thanks to all, for all the help in recovering these files.

All I've come up with so far is qxpupdater61fix.sit.

Thanks Dax, that was all I was able to locate also (+ some 6.5 help file updates for Panther etc).

I think this request may rely on someone reading this page, who has DL'd these updates at some stage and has kept a copy. Sad

Tall order, but worth a shot Smile

MTT; added a 6.1 updater/installer on the QXP 6 Passport page. It's a 'hack update' but works IIRC Wink

Thanks for this. It installs an IE version of Passport 6.1. We've since located updaters to 6.5 & 6.52, but so far these don't want to upgrade over your upload. Either because its cracked or an IE version and the updater is US. So I'm still seeking that original 6.1 update file from Quark. Thanks for helping tho'.

[Edit] the updater to 6.5 installs over the included 6.1 (not the cracked part) but then requests online activation. It will not however install over the cracked additions.

I've checked the MacFormat CD catalogue, but there's no updaters for QuarkXpress 6. Sad Might be worth checking other magazine cover discs though - the big updaters were often distributed that way in the days of slow / no internet access.

A good suggestion. Perhaps one of the DTP magazines would have distributed these. They would need to be from around 2003 - 5 tho', I would think.

I did find some updaters for older versions of QuarkXpress on the MacFormat cover disk catalogue. I'll have to double-check what date the disk catalogue stops - there may be something on the cover CDs / DVDs after that date.

My MacFormat disc catalogue goes through to Dec 2016 which would be covered in that 2003-2005 period, so I don't have any of the updates, sorry.

Oh that is a pity. Thank you for taking the time to check this out, all the same. Cheers.

Bumping.

We're still seeking the 6.1 update file as distributed by Quark:

File name: qxpress61updater.hqx   size: 80.5 MB

Anyone possessing or knowing the whereabouts of this elusive critter...
Please upload it to the QuarkXPress 6.0 Passport page.

I have QXP PP 6.1 CD toast image and QXP PP 6.1 k'ed installer, would it help?

Thanks but no. I'm specifically after this particular 6.1 updater that was distributed by Quark.

My reasons for this are given in the user comments of the QuarkXPress 6 Passport page.

Thanks all the same.

checking quark downloads page on archive.org but haven't found it yet.

Thanks for looking. I had given the Wayback Machine a fairly comprehensive search before posting this request. But I do appreciate a 2nd opinion, as I could have overlooked something there.

It does look to me tho' that Quark made it very difficult for web scrapers like those used by archive.org to archive these updates. Cheers, I hope you have better luck than me.

The link you are looking for was:
http://download.quark.com.edgesuite.net/xpress/updaters/61/qxpress61upda...

Unfortunately, it is down, and there doesn't seem to be any mirror.

Also, forging the link according to the new Quark download server doesn't seems to work. Example:
http://files.quark.com/download/7.1/QuarkXPress7.1updater_Mac.dmg

Good luck Sad

Did they provide any of those to magazines for CDs? https://archive.org/search.php?query=quarkxpress%206.1&sin=TXT&and[]=subject%3A%22mac%22 indicates they might have. Maybe search the MacAddict 100 through 105 CDs?

Fortunately the major Mac magazines that included disks with their distributions (including MacAddict), also included DiskTracker databases of their content and backlogs. Which makes looking for specific items a breeze.

Unfortunately the inclusion of QuarkXPress updates on their disks appears to have stopped at version 4.x, I couldn't even see any version 5 updates let-alone version 6 updates for Quark.

Perhaps by that time Quark wanted to track all use of their software and decided to control even the distribution of updaters? I don't know of course, just guessing.

Getting a copy of this updater I feel will rely on that one person reading this who happened to DL and archive the updater back when it was available as a DL from Quark...

Exactly my situation with the Performa P1 and P3 release versions; no official releases available, have to depend on people who thought to archive at the time :\

Unfortunately, my QuarkXPress archives only go up t o 4.11; I switched to InDesign after that.

Are we 100% sure the only possible file name is "qxpress61updater.hqx?" - I have no dog in this fight, but there is a file named "QuarkXPress 6.1.bin" at the link below - there is also one named "QuarkXPress 6.5updater.bin"

http://www.gegereka.com/?query=QuarkXPress+6.1&bank=0

(be sure to click on "more" to see everything)

I am not going to create an account at this questionable site to access downloads - but I thought the file names might yield additional search options.

UPDATE: here's an ftp download link:

ftp://ftp.quentin.cz/pub/Quark/OLD/QuarkXPress%206.x/instalace/QuarkXPre...

Thanks, but we are looking for the first missing one only on this list:

  • 6.1 qxpress61updater.hqx 80.5 MB
  • 6.5 qxpress65updater.hqx 154 MB
  • 6.52 quarkxpress652updater_mac.dmg 20.7 MB

The goal here is to update the version 6.0 to ----> 6.1 (missing) ----> 6.5 ----> 6.5.2

The link u provided is a complete version of Quark Xpress &... for Windows. Sad

On a hunch I downloaded the .bin file (my post above: comment #21)
- converted it to an .iso (I used AnyToISO cuz I'm lazy, I'm sure there's other ways to do it)
- mounted it in Finder (I'm using 10.13.3)

sure enough - 6.1 installer for Mac - not sure if this helps at all - I did read the entire thread and understand the need/desire for the missing updater

Much to my surprise, it's a hybrid Mac/Win disk image of version 6.1.

My surprise being, my own retail copy is the same - I didn't know this before, because the packaging only mentions the Mac and I assume the validation code will allow installing on a Mac only. But it too is a hybrid Mac/Win pressed install disk as I've just discovered. It appears to be the same as the .bin copy you located.

It will insist on online or phone activation after install, so it won't be of much use to anyone as is unless they have a validation code and can then proceed with online or phone activation.

I wonder if the 6.1 updater introduces online/phone activation? As the version 6.0 copy that's here doesn't appear to ask for any. Hence my curiosity in locating the updater. Damned difficult to find a copy tho' it seems.

Hi jonnyboy. It's as MacTouch says...

You are right tho' as this updater to 6.1 could have any name that a person may have re-named it to. - "qxpress61updater.hqx" is only the last known official download name of the file. It's all that we have to reliably go by.

Thanks for looking out for this. That is appreciated. Also thanks for that very interesting cz site.

By the way, your concern about that updater got my attention, and you had me going through the QuarkXPress 6.1 original installer (probably the same that you already have) and the patched installer that was on the Warez scene at that time.

As the patch author stated in its readme.nfo file, I can confirm that:

This installer use the Xshb resource of QuarkXPress 6 beta.

1. Set system Date & Time up to 2014.

2. Run this modified installer using this serial:
81TU5XF32YKM8KKQKJH4F1Z9KJJHWVR9REFTZ2ZW5NAU1KN

3. Launch QuarkXPress Passport to check it.

4. Go back to our Date & Time.

And now I get the point of getting the original updater (as the 6.5 updaters will probably refuse to update that 6.1 Xshb'd), or a way to bypass that phone activation (but that I can't test as I have no valid target machine).

Good luck!

the 6.5 updaters will probably refuse to update that 6.1 Xshb'd

Yes, the patched 6.1 version on the 6.0 Passport page does not permit the 6.5 updater to build a working copy...

Tho' I don't know if the same workaround was used in creating the 6.1 copy we have.

So if you wouldn't mind adding the installer to the 6.0 page I will try running the updater on it.

Thanks for that. Following the instructions (setting clock back) worked fine and a working copy of 6.1 installs without a problem. However the 6.5 updater refuses to build on it. *^%$#!!! Quark.

It's back to the drawing board for me, I'm afraid.

Any chance the same crack would work on 6.5 installer? i.e. replacing the Xshb resource of the updater and clock trick.

I may look at it later. However I have compared the Xshb resource and think it may be too dissimilar to work. In the 6.1 copy it has a size of 273069 and name "Carbon Xcod" and in the 6.5 updater it has a size of 4459 and name "LangSelector Carbon Xcod". Their ID's are the same.

I am curious, MikeTomTom, that you state that you have "located" the 6.5 and 6.52 updaters but I cannot find them on this site. I have original QuarkXpress 6.1 and 6.5 Updater CDs, but never got a hold of the 6.52 Updater. I can upload the 6.1 Updater CD, and even the 6.5 disk as well, if you like, but I would like to know that I will receive the 6.52 Updater in return. If the 6.52 updater is already here, could you direct me to it? I see this thread is over a year old, so maybe I'm late to the party...

Best regards,

Mark Harrison

Hi Mark, they weren't put up as they needed the missing 6.1 update. But we kept them on hand for the time that this was resolved...

Anyway, I've added them to the QXP 6.x page, so help yourself. If you can also add your 6.1 & even 6.5 to that page too, this would be excellent. Thanks.

I've added the 6.1 and 6.5 Updater disk images in the CDR Master format from Disk Utility so as not to short-change anyone interested. The original disks are identified as "For Mac OS and Windows." Hope I have preserved that versatility, but I don't have access to a PC to verify that.

Thanks also for the 6.52 updater.

Best regards,

Mark Harrison

Many thanks for the 6.1 & 6.5 updaters, Mark.

Your CD rips are in excellent order and do contain both Mac & Win installers.

Unfortunately, the 6.1 installer does not want to update over the version 6.0 Passport copy we have here at the MG. So we're still without a working upgrade path it seems.

Bah. So close and yet so far Tongue

Any chance you can add your version 6.0 copy to the page? Thanks again, Mark.

I won't get a chance to do my Quark re-install for a couple of days and I still need to track down that disc to do so, but will try to have it for you by the end of the week.

Best regards, Mark Harrison

Thanks if you can do this, Mark. No rush for it here, this has been a 3 or 4 year project hoping for completion. It'll just be great if you can find the disc and also add it to the MG archive, when you have some time.

It turns out the version 6.0 copy we have, is a beta version. So after all this, this is a new discovery and challenge to overcome. I would never have realized it if not for your 6.1 update.

Thanks again.
