Request: Ferazel's Wand by Ambrosia Software

There is a page for this one (http://macintoshgarden.org/games/ferazels-wand) but it only has the demo, claiming the full version is available for purchase.

I attempted to purchase the full version from Ambrosia last night. Their site took my card, but I never got the game.

I instead got an email with a blank license code and instructions to "register", and no place to download the game. (FW was perhaps the only Ambrosia game to be distributed on CD instead of as shareware).

I contacted support, but... Sad this may no longer be supported.

edit: No longer a request, as Ambrosia SW is still in business - waiting to see if they get back to me re: downloading Ferazel

Contact your bank and dispute the charge.

Ambrosia's serial numbers expire after 30 days so anything you find online will be useless.

None of my Ambrosia software registration codes have ever expired at all, let alone after only 30 days, but then I've only ever tried Ambrosia's ancient software, not their newer stuff. You do apparently have to set the computer's date back to the date the code was issued though.

I first ran into the expiry issue in 2002 after a disk crash. My copy of Snapz Pro needed to be reinstalled. But I was unable to do it because my license code was wrong.

Later I read an article (http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=893992) describing why my code didn't work.

Ferazel's Wand is not a serialized game.

I believe it’s the only Ambrosia game that doesn’t use registration code authentication. Instead, only a demo is available online (much smaller than real game / missing the real game data files) and the full copy shipped unlocked on a CD.

I purchased a CD back in the day but it’s long-gone. I tried to re-purchase from Ambrosia the other night, but their system is broken (clearly it’s set up only for the serial games, and Ferazel has no serial - what I need is a download).

Re: Ambrosia games with serials, the old serials (I believe 9 digit codes, no dashes) did not expire or need renewing. The new serials (with dashes) expire every 3 months for new authentications. So your current registered copies continue to work, but you can't register new copies without renewing via Ambrosia servers.

tldr: I’ve bought the game multiple times, I’m not sure it’s really for sale anymore since the purchase on the Ambrosia website failed, maybe somebody can upload it or send it to me, I just want to play it!! Smile

I have got the full game (impossible rubbish that it is), but at 66MB there's no way I can upload it via my s-l-o-w dial-up connection.

I bought the CD back in early 2000's and I still have it. I do have a raw hex dump of the CD ROM and was able to boot it up in Sheepshaver fine, but do wait to see what the Ambrosia crew have to say. The worst case scenario is that you'll have to privately message me somehow (Hint: I'm the eMaculation forums). I'm rather nervous to upload it here, since the company is still in business and they still have the rights to it.

Yes, please don't upload it here.

The MG does not host or archive Ambrosia's software at this point in time.

[Edit] exceptions might be demos only, or those no longer listed at Ambrosia, or ones that may have slipped in under the radar...

Gotcha. Makes sense. It does seem like they are still in business other than purchasing this game being broken on their site. Thanks all. I'll update this thread if I do hear from Ambrosia and receive the game from them (or if I don't, as a warning to others who may also be thinking of buying it!).

I should note that it took a couple of weeks for my CD to get here. You only purchased it yesterday, so do wait a while for it to come. Seeing that nothing will be shipped to you is rather unpleasant, considering the whole point behind Ferazel's Wand's distribution would be that you would have a downloadable demo and a CD with the full game on it.

Oh, yeah, one more thing...Ambrosia fired all of their coders in 2013. That would explain the state of disrepair. Your case is not the only one where people have been screwed over due to a lack of response from Ambrosia.

Here's someone with the same problems you're facing.

It's rather sad to see Ambrosia as only a semi-present ghost of its former self, but I'm not surprised. They stopped being interested in Mac games and all of its coders have moved on to different things.

It took them nearly two months to get back to me, but they finally did. I planned to wait until just before the end of my chargeback period (90 days), then dispute if I still hadn't heard back.

They refunded my card. They said also said they'd still ship the disc to me - hopefully that happens Smile

I got in JUST before they went sour, and got back my activation codes for 6 or 7 games... they were superb, as I had no clue what my original email I used to activate the software was... they still came through with the goods.

This is sad to hear. I loved almost every game they made.

A few months back, I Googled "Ferazel's Wand" to see what would come up, and one of the results was a link:

http://www.ferazel.com

When I went to the site, there wasn't very much to see, just the words "Ferazel's Wand," and a link. I clicked the link and ended up on a site called "5 Elements Entertainment."

When I clicked the one link available on the page, I ended up on a page with a menu, one of which said "Properties."

When I clicked that, I saw "Ferazel's Wand," but it was just a picture ... but when I clicked the picture, these words appeared:

Ferazel's Wand
Partner Ben Spees created this cult classic and 5e acquired the IP. Look for a rerelease of the original and beyond.
Client name: 5 Elements Entertainment
Date: TBA
Link: http://ferazel.com

... so there's hope!

It seems the same applies to Harry the Handsome Executive. This was the original announcement page, back in December 2015; http://5elementsentertainment.com/harry_ferazel/

Ferazel and Harry creator Ben Spees is CTO of 5 Elements Entertainment. There might be a happy ending to this... someone should ask him about the Mac OS 9 versions once/when/if they have the re-release ready.

Wow, I didn't think to look for "Harry the Handsome Executive" ...! Not sure if I ever finished that one ...

The book 'The Secret History of Mac Gaming' released aroundabout this time last year stated that Ben was insistent that 'Harry would spin his wheels again', so it's fairly likely we'll see somthing at somepoint

Unfortunately, it looks like they acquired the rights in 2015 and nothing has come of it. I just want to see a straight port to Windows and macOS, no crazy redesigns, all the original 1990s references with AOL disks intact.

Yeah; HTHE really only has its place in history as a 90's fixture. Before we had The Office, we had the Aeron chairs, and Harry. Never before or since have average people obsessed so much over office chairs.

Harry is annoyingly difficult to run correctly with the (very important) music and sound playing as intended. On one machine I have an AppleScript setup to switch between the latest QuickTime and QuickTime 2.5 with the Harry instruments.

A simple re-release would be excellent indeed.

This saga ended sadly a couple months later with me receiving a cracked disc in the mail Sad

Harry & Ferazel were two of my special favorites (of the many amazing Ambrosia titles) and I do hope something comes of the rights re-acquisition, though it has been some time now...

I've had an eBay alert out for Ferazel's Wand CD for years since the above transpired but it hasn't popped; if anyone had a legit copy they'd be willing to part ways with I'd love to discuss!

Sorry to hear you never got a working disc! During the dwindling days of Ambrosia, a Cythera forum member was accidentally sent multiple copies by Bernard; it was almost absurd. Not sure if she still has them, but you may be able to get some help on the Cythera discord or forums.
