Public Access File Repository !

The Macintosh Garden Public Access File Repository !

About the service

This is a new service we're offering, and for now it'll run as a trial to see how well it's received. The idea behind it is mainly to offer a means to archive / mirror the file base either for personal reasons or through fear that the garden may vanish (which it will not).

My hopes is that this will put an end to many and most of the poorly crafted scraping tools some users and guests are (ab)using. This is our gift to you, FTP access where all of the apps, games and manuals are synchronized every three (3) hours.

Limits

Connections per IP: 3
FXP: Allowed
Speed Limit: None

Current Status

1 Servers Online

Connection Details:

Hostname: repo1.macintoshgarden.org
Username: macgarden
Password: publicdl

Hostname: repo2.macintoshgarden.org
Username: macgarden
Password: publicdl

Anti-Hammering

Your IP may get blocked if you try to sign in too many times (5 times under 1 minute). In case of accidents, like the client attempting to open more connections and failing several times in a row, please use the contact form and I'll assist as soon as possible.

Do note that this also applies to the application and game pages if you choose to use the FTP link instead of web link to download files.

FTP Clients

From a Mac, you can use popular clients such as Fetch, Transmit and Cyberduck.
For Windows, there are tools such as FileZilla, FlashFXP and WinSCP.

Finally ...

The files within the FTP servers are unsorted, thus listing the contents may be slow. This will be addressed later and is currently not a priority.

I think it's a cool idea; however, I have a bit of a request.

Would it be too much to ask for the app and game downloads to be sorted into folders by category (such as separate folders for OSes, utilities, etc.)? Without that sort of organizational system, it's rather hard for me to look through them all and expect to find what I'm looking for very easily.

That's actually not the point at all, and yes, it would be too much to ask.

The point with the repository is to move all the site scrapers out from the main site and provide some kind of bulk downloading service for paranoid people thinking MG will die.

If you want something specific, just search the website.

Good idea! Hopefully that plan will work and the content scrapping will cease ...

A technology issue. Mac OS X requires the system partition (boot) to be case-INsensitive, i.e., lower and upper case are treated the same. After trying to understand a strange behaviour on my side, I noticed that some files names on the FTP repo(sitory) are case-sensitive: "Archive.sit" vs "archive.sit". Since the upload page changes the file names to adapt to different platforms (OS 9, for example), what about ensuring that there are no name conflict caused by 'casing'?

Haven't really reflected on this to be honest, although the layout will change drastically later, so the FTP repo isn't that highly prioritized at this time.

In the meantime it should reflect whats on the site, everything is synched as-is, and as you may have noticed, it's chaotic.

Is the FTP down right now? Doesn't seem to respond to pings from here.

Yes. It's down. Moving the FTP server and some other stuff to a new location. Will be back up as soon as it's done Smile

It's back up, but speeds may be low until we get the ISP switched out Tongue

Is the FTP server off line or am I blocked?
For the first time I tried to use FTP today and everything worked fine.
When I downloaded some files, I noticed that the number of simultaneous downloads was above the maximum and stopped the FTP program.
I adjusted the number of simultaneous downloads to the number of connections allowed..
After the adjustment I started the FTP program again, but connecting was not possible anymore.
If I'm blocked, my apologies, it wasn’t my intention to exceed the maximum connections.
I hope that you will remove my ip blockage.

@Paul Sondervan:

Well you aren't blocked from this web site. The FTP site seems to up now. Maybe clearing your browser cache would help.

The connections per IP are 2, so I would stick to that, tho'.

Weird.
When using the Transmit application I get following message when I try to connect to repo.macintoshgarden.org:
Could not connect to server “repo.macintoshgarden.org”.
Server closed connection.

When I try to connect via the Finder -> Connect to Server -> ftp://repo.macintoshgarden.org, I'm asked for the username/password.
After I entered the given username/password the following message appears:
There was a problem connecting to the server “repo.macintoshgarden.org”.
Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator.

Do you have any idea why I can't get connect to the FTP server?

I admit it's kind of odd. Perhaps its an issue with your ISP service right now?

I'm getting much the same errors as you when using one server to access repo.macintoshgarden.org

But changing the ISP I use to another, I don't have any problem accessing the MG's FTP server. So one ISP service I use is definitely having issues...

I don't think the problem is at the MG end, but fogWraith or Knez may have better ideas.

I've tweaked the settings for the server, and cleared the list of blocked IP's. You probably have access again.

Thank you, I can access the FTP server now. Smile

[edit]
Only for a few minutes.
Although my FTP program (Transmit) is set to have max 2 connections, it tries to have more connections at the same time.
The result is that I'm blocked again. Sad

Thank you fogWraith!
Log in on the FTP server is possible again.
I try to be more careful, to prevent blocking.

The lockout period is 24 hours if it does occur, but use the contact form if it does happen again, I'm usually much easier to reach through that Wink

I just tried the ftp and it works perfectly. I used my Macintosh SE with System 6 and Fetch 3.

As far as I can see, you're trying to move into folders that don't exist, so you may have to change your script a little.

Nothing in the banned list either, so you're green for testing Wink

Is the server down?
I get an error message in Transmit when I try to make a connection.

'Could not connect to server “repo.macintoshgarden.org”.
Connection timed out or server hung up.'

I would say it is down. I get a request timeout when I ping the address.

I believe it's down, and for some reason has another IP than it should have, I'll look at it now.

Edit:
Sneaky ISP has placed pretty much everything behind CGN

Edit 2:
Everything is working as it should.

"server.Username"? Currently, the username to use is macgarden and password is publicdl

Make sure you are not misspelling those or using capital letters and try again.

Hi MacTouch. Perhaps it was not available for you when you last tried, I don't know. But it seems fine and working well from where I am right now. Cheers.

Thanks a lot for the FTP.
Just one question: How about all the information that is stored only on the web server?
There is a lot of valuable information there (like troubleshooting, reg codes etc). Would it at all be possible to just make that available as a contiguous download of "awholelotofhtml.zip" or something?

At this point in time, no.
Pretty much every page along with previous revisions as well as comments are stored in a database, where the contents are stored in different tables and such.

There might be a feature in the future where something like this may be available, though it does currently not have a high priority.

If you want to download all the files, you'll need at least 3.045 TB of disk space, thus far.
Are you looking for download mirrors? If so, I can ask my datacenter for a 4TB drive to use for mirroring.

I've started working on a new G4 Cube-centric site, and I would be happy to do some mirroring - I have a pretty beefy hosting account. It will be at http://www.g4cubed.com, but I'm still working on it - as usual, the job and the real world keep getting in the way.

If you're up for it, I can pull everything into a mirror site, or I can ship off a 4T or so disk if you like. I'm in no hurry -- I just want to ensure we don't lose the excellent resource we have here. Too many sites have gone away as of late...

By all means, this is why the repository exists, and I don't see us vanishing in the near future.
Looking forward to see a new Cube-centric site, since the old one upped and vanished into thin air along with all its valuable resources, documentations etc.
