Older System

Any one got systems that are older System 6?

If my memory serves correctly, all of the above could only use MFS volumes in contrary to the later HFS.
If you plan to use a large disk (image) formatting it as MFS is a must.

That’s not completely correct; my list of macOS versions on wikia spells it out. HFS came along pretty early but was incompatible with the 128k. However, the System for HD20 contained an HFS boot loader for the 512k because MFS wasn’t compatible with high capacity storage; it was designed for 400k disks.

System 2.1 and Finder 5.0 from late 1985 were the first publicly-released HFS-compatible System/Finder combination. You can read about the history of HFS here.

You might like to check out the "Apple Developer CD Series Volume III" CD disk image. It contains every System release from version 0.1 to 6.05 in original unmodified Disk Copy 4 image format.
