New game upload!

http://macintoshgarden.org/games/rose-garden

This is a game that my dad was making in the early 90's that I thought I had lost. I've had it on an old LC II drive all these years. A $15 SCSI controller card is all that I needed.

This game never made it out of the beta stage. The game is highly playable and fun. There is only one level, called a "garden" and the level editor has long since been lost. I'm probably going to try and decode the garden file format and try making my own editor.

Some rather notable figures in the Macintosh shareware community helped make this game happen. It's a real shame that my dad never completed it.

I've tested it in Basilisk II under OS 7.5.5 and SheepShaver under 8.6. Sound works in Basilisk. In SheepShaver, I could play it with a 32-bit monitor, but I had to set the colors to 8-bit to run in Basilisk. I vaguely remember playing this on my PPC-based iMac under OS 10.2, but no promises. The game runs extremely fast, even if the speed is set to the lowest setting. If there is some utility to reduce the speed further, I'd love to hear about it.

Since my dad has officially abandoned this, I'm releasing it as freeware, but the copyright still applies. I am considering remaking this game for current hardware, so no rights other than distribution, hosting and use are granted.

Glad to hear you consider to remake this for current hardware,
do you mean Mac OS X, hopefully? Wink

I'm going to restart the sprite API "Sprite World". First thing will be a total rewrite and a Windows port. Then OS X and Linux. So, yes, but it will be a while.

Well, in a matter of minutes I happily deciphered the garden file! Laughing out loud This means that I can whip up a level editor in short order. It will make the game all that much more valid. I can only do Windows development at the moment, but I'll release the editor to anyone interested when I'm done. It will be next week of the week after before that happens though.

BTW, how long does it take, on average, for a game file to be available on the server? It's been over 8 hours and it still doesn't work. Puzzled I'd just use an external file hosting service, but I doubt that they will allow a .sit file upload.

So I'm almost exactly ten years late to this, but was the level editor ever finished? I'm quite curious about this now that I've stumbled upon it.

Something must be wrong then.
