Yeah, it would be nice so I can put some stuff up. I couldn't get FTP to work and the web is a bit flakey for me.

For everybody, there's no need to have an account. Just use "mg" with both username & password...

Max is maybe on vacation, he uses to look into this thread from time to time.

FTP does not work from my side either.
Wired server is up, but refuses to accept download requests. Directories are displayed.
Max will sure fix things, as soon as possible, don´t worry. Smile

@themacthing: I will get that sorted asap

In regards to the FTP it looks like passive mode is broken again, i'll have a look in to why.

The problems with wired seem to be a compatibility issue between wired server 1.3.4 and OSX sierra, restarting the server will fix it for a little bit but it eventually seems to return. I might try building the command line version of the server from source and see if that helps. (Btw, the the wired users, What are you using to connect with? I have been thinking of moving to wired server 2.0 which should play better with sierra, but the client dosen't support PPC)

Additionally it seems the sata card in my server just died...... But the drives connected to that aren't important to the server

Anyone having problems with wired or FTP should be able to connect with WFM at: http://max1zzz.co.uk:8000 for the mean time

EDIT: FTP should be working again, for some reason the Airport screwed up it's port forwarding table again and was only forwarding one FTP data port not 50.....

Thanks Max!
Seems Wired1 and Sierra was my issue. Filezilla is working again. Great!

I´m unsure about wired2, I think its the way to go, but if its only me using wired, you may also leave it as it is. Smile

The server will be down for 24ish hours from about 8 or 9PM BST tonight.

Just brought a 4TB HDD, I need to migrate backups onto that then move server data onto a 2x2TB RAID 0 array. This move is required as a member is currently uploading their entire collection of apple disks which come in at about 1.1TB....

1.1 TB is more data than I've ever been able to fit onto a hard drive...

Although, then again, I've never had a hard drive with that large a capacity. LOL

I remember when I started this server the data was all on a 80GB drive which I thought I would never fill up Smile

I did run in to a problem installing the 4TB drive, turns out my SAS card connected to my external drive box dosen't support HDD's over 2TB so I have ended up putting the main data drives in the external and the 4TB internally in the server. Went to find a new SAS card and found out that mac compatible cards cost several hundred £.... i'm probably going to use the slightly cheaper method of building a second server and getting a couple of second hand fiber channel cards

Too bad Max, the good old 2TB limit. Thought we got rid of that with 32Bit OS like Windows XP.
Thanks for your hard work, time and money spent on your labour of love.

We should now be back to business as normal, only now there is 1.9TB of free space Smile

@24bit: Unfortunately it is a limit of the controller rather than the OS, Windows xp will be quite happy to use a 4TB hdd if your controller will support it Smile Turns out my SAS controller is from 2006 or 2007 so it's not really any surprise it can't use 4TB hdd's

The problem is not the date but the manufacturer.
SATA standard was defined already with 48-bits sector addressing.
Some lazy manufacturers decided to build controllers with less than 48-bits sector addressing.
An Apple PowerMac G5 from 2003, or any Intel MoBo from that year, has support for 48-bits. You can happily use 8TB HDDs on those machines.
The same goes for the OSes.

Server will be down for a while tomorrow while I see how easy this Fiber Channel business is to setup Smile
Just waiting on a 8pin ATX extension cable for the new server as the cable on the PSU is not long enough to reach the socket on the board.

Hopefully it is as easy as it looks to setup Freenas as a Fiber Channel target Smile

turns out qlogic quietly dropped OSX support from the card I brought. So even though the product specs say OSX is supported there are no drivers available for it (And i cant find a copy of the old ones anywhere)

I have ordered a LSI card which is supposed to be compatible. Failing that I will just do iSCSI over copper GBE.

Or sort of amusingly I could run Vmware ESXi on the server and put OSX in a VM and then I would be able to use the FC card Smile

Edit: scheduled maintenance will take longer than expected, one of my HDD's is either badly corrupted or on it's way out. I was expecting the HDD to take a few hours to clone, it's going to take more like 24 hours. As the server is currently on the floor in my room far away from it's SAS box with the server HDD's in all services will be down while this is happening

Edit 2: ETA is around currently another 48 hours, Backing up 1.4TB of data at 5Mb/s is killing me.....

Just thought I'd ask, are there any versions of Mac OS X other than 10.0-10.2 that you'd take an upload of? I have, for example, 10.4 for the Mac Mini G4/1.42.

I'm currently only taking up to Panther, I don't count Tiger as abandonware just yet as the last major update was released in late 2007 so it's not quite been 10 years yet

tiger isn't abandonware because the apple tv 1st gen firmware is based on it

tiger will never be abandonware until the apple tv 1st gen os is

Good news!
I got the LSI FC card today, and it all works fine Smile
The best thing is FC is plug and play, no software is needed to mount the drives, just plug the fiber cable in and your away Smile

The server is now all ready to go back into service, but I am waiting for a break in the rain to take the server out to the outbuilding it lives in. It's been raining solidly since about 10am so that might not be any time soon.....

Not that unusual no Smile But at least there is usually at least some break in it (I only need about 30 seconds clear to get the server in there) but it's literally not stopped all day... Hears hoping for a break tomorrow! Smile

Hey max,

Would you take that ISO of OpenDarwin 7.2.1 I posted in the "OSes" section on here as an upload to your server? I still have it, and would like to share it with your server as well. Smile

-os9er

P.S. One other item I have that I haven't seen on your server:

- Mac OS X Server 10.3.4 (CD version), which I could make ISOs of pretty easily; includes Install CDs 1-3, and the Admin Tools CD.

At least its working and free for everybody. Santa
We should be more thankful for people hosting things on their private server, donating time, money and bandwith to us.
Even if Max is on fibre wire, there will be tons of other network related tasks running at the same time.

Hey all,
It's been a while since I have dropped in here (Or even paid much attention to my server tbh), In January I'm going to be making some changes to how the server works.
The main change being that the server will be made read only, as I just don't have any spare time to sort any new uploads (and really haven't had the time for years...).
The second main change is that no new accounts will be created for the same reason.

Back when I started the server Macintosh Garden was slow, unreliable and relied heavily on external hosting sites so maintaining archives like mine made sense. These days Macintosh garden has none of these issues so maintaining this archive has become increasingly hard to justify. I have considered just shutting the site down however the server it runs on currently hosts other stuff so it dosen't make sense to shut this service down. So for the time being the server will continue on as a read only archive, however this may change in the near future as the remaining services running on the box don't really justify the two high power server box's that draw a rather large amount of power.

Anyway, I hope everyone here has a great Christmas and that Macintosh Garden remains running for the forceable future!

If you are concerned about power consumption, why not move the service(s) to (multiple) Raspberry Pi(s)?

max1zzz's picture
Offline

That would be a option, however I really have neither the time nor enthusiasm to maintain the server anymore. Anything on my server that is not on the garden should be copied now as the end of my server will likely be mid jan to mid feb.

I'm going to be moving the services I use personally to a colocation host however I will be keeping a low power box locally for a couple of services that can't feasibly be ran direct over the internet (most likely a pi or a atom based box) so I could run the server from there (The colo host i'm going with has a no piracy rule (as most do) and although I know we wouldn't really consider this piracy they will so it can't be hosted from there) but I don't really want to have to deal with the upkeep unfortunately.

Hi Max!

Never got the pleasure of knowing you, but you shutting down your server is a HUGE loss for the vintage Mac-community. Your server will be deeply missed!

Anyways, I can only thank you on my own behalf for all the years you held it going.

Hope to see you around at the Garden anyways from time to time Smile

Oh man, so sad to hear that server is going down. Even today, there's a bunch of stuff I can only find there. I'm considering buying a few 4 TB hard drives to see if I can mirror the server in time. Sad Hopefully I won't be too late.

Luckily there is a full archive that of my hole server on line here: http://mirror.macintosharchive.org/max1zzz.co.uk/ so nothing will be lost Smile I'm not going to be wiping the storage drives from the server either, they will be safely packed away in case they are ever needed again

The official end of my server will probably be the end of February. One important note is that this will include pretty much everything hosted on my server (The main FTP server, the "files" account linked to from some pages on mg and mrdav's stuff hosted under files.max1zzz.co.uk/mrdav) the latter two are not archived by macintosharchive but should all be duplicates of stuff uploaded directly to mg but if any of them aren't they should be mirrored now

Looks like my server will not be going down tomorrow, it turned out that macintosharchive's mirror was not a complete mirror so the server will remain up until the server has finished mirroring to macintosharchive. I'm not sure how long this will be but it will likely be several weeks
