I keep trying to download the Quake iso with music, but it keeps failing on me, does anyone know why? I couldn't even download from the game's page, I had to go in to the FTP to find it.

@bombman: I didn't have any problem DL'ng the zipped bin/cue file from that ftp link on the Quake page.

I uploaded what I got to the main Quake 1 page which you can access, if ftp is still giving you grief (2nd DL in page).

Yeah unfortunately some people will have problem downloading from me, which I guess is just because the internet isn't optimized for residential -> residential connections (and my server is home hosted)

There is also a bug that some people seem to experience where the ftp software jumps from one directory being the root to another (it's the same folder, but sometimes it jumps from displaying the folders contents at the root of the share (what it should be doing) and showing the folder it's self at the root (which it shouldn't be doing))

I uploaded a few files (Price of Persia Cheats and Level Editor). I also sent a text file with the info for an account. How do we know if an account has been established? Do you send us our log in credentials?

Hey, I'v created your account now

I have been a little busy lately and hadn't checked on the account requests for a while.

If people leave a email address in their account requests I will email them once it is set up
Or if i'm taking a while feel free to contact me and bug me about it Smile (either on here, on wired, or email me at admin@max1zzz.co.uk)

Ok, temptation got the better of me: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131410871869

I should be able to just drop the drive from the pro into it so there shouldn't be much of a transition time. (Just need to find out if the xserve is EFI32 or EFI64, since the current pro uses a modified bootloader to boot mavericks on a EFI32 mac)

Server is down for a little while while i reorganize the rack (new xserve and UPS are being installed), I thought it would be a simple job, until it turned out that the rails that came with the server where not the full depth ones so i had to move the posts closer together

The new xserve won't be up and running for a week or two, it's got a fancy raid card which i need to figure out how it works Smile and i have a week free in a couple of weeks

Ok, everything is migrated to the new xserve which is currently sitting on my desk for bench testing (The server should be working as normal just as soon as everyone's DNS records update to my new ip)

It will go down again in a hour or two when I take it down and install it in the rack, but that should only be for a few minutes

Server will be down for a little bit later today or tomorrow.

I need to upgrade the firmware on our router (As it keeps dropping 2.4ghz wifi for some reason) however this will reset it to factory settings, and TP-Link very helpfully changed the format the config files are saved in (So I have to re enter all the settings manually.....)

Router has finally been updated, please report anything I have broken!

Also, 123-reg offered me a free .uk domain, so you can now access the server via max1zzz.uk, should typeing the ".co" from the old domain take too long for you Smile (Old address is still there and i may drop the .uk one in a year once it comes up for renewal and I actually have to pay for it...)

Ok, In best tradition I am going to remove the download cap untill mid day on the 26th Smile

I know I haven't done this in a while, but as the 2nd of Oct this year marked 5 years of me runnign this server it seems appropriate to bring this little tradition back Smile

Upcoming service interruptions / downtime (Due to our impending house move):

Tuesday / Wednesday - Server may be down for a bit For data migration to a temporary machine - server data will be frozen after this, any uploads / account requests won't be counted (Well, at least until I set the xserve up again in a couple of months Smile )

Saturday / Sunday - Server will be down while I Dismantle the setup and move it across to the temporary machine, server data will be unfrozen after this

Some time in the future - The server will be down for the actual move / network wiring / internet connection etc

Btw - Most (if not all) FTP accounts now have a out of date root folder list. It seems something in the user database is corrupt and the FTP software freaks out if I try to edit it.

I'm going to migrate back to Rumpus in the near future, but it will be the beginning of next month before I have the money to purchase the licence.

If you want to see what has changed please log on wired and you'll get the correct list.
(the ftp accounts will still work, none of the old root folders have been moved / renamed - just the list is no longer up to date)

Why don't you try vsFTPd for your ftp server instead of other paid solutions? It's more stable then even paid software I used, and it's free/open source.

The server will be down from Monday until at least Friday next week as we are moving house on Monday and a engineer from talktalk won't be round to reconnect the internet until Friday.

@uyjulian, I have looked at a few free bits of software before and in theory there isn't any good reason to not use them, But the problem i have found with them in the past is they never tend to be as easy to setup as the commercial software (Which is a big bonus if you are lazy like me Smile ) but also it never tends to be as easy to transfer the user accounts, whereas I have spoken to the dev's of rumpus and know it is relatively easy for me to transfer the user database to it

Server will be down for at least another week and a half, Our old ISP failed to reconnect us on friday and wouldn't send a engineer for another two weeks. and seeing as our old ISP is legendary for having really bad customer support we decided just to ditch them rather than fight it out.

Only problem is it will take around 10 working days for our new ISP to set everything up, So it's not really a faster solution, but it should be better in the long run.

Sorry for your ISP troubles. Thanks again for hosting such a great collection.

Ok, switchover date came and went, still no internet.... We have a engineer coming out tomorrow so hopefully it'll finally get sorted!

Additionally I have purchased a new server (Yeah another one... But this one is actually new this time!) only problem is the server (A Dell PowerEdge T20) Won't run OSX. My plan is to either run Debian Linux or Windows Server 2012 on it, My preference would be to run windows on it but wired won't run under windows. I will have to play around with the setup a bit to see what works best, Because of this the server may be a bit unreliable for the first couple of weeks when it comes back up

Nice to see that theres some progress, I can only imagine the interwebpipes clogging up with people wanting back on the server Smile

FreeBSD is easy to use (even moreso these days), just a tiny tip, Wired should run under BSD

Thanks Smile

I'll take a look at FreeBSD, The only reason I am somewhat wary of linux / unix is my experience is that it is harder to setup / maintain. That said I haven't made a real attempt to run a unix / linux based server for a few years, so maybe it's time for another attempt Smile

Finally, I have internet!!!!!

Getting 63.1mbp/s down and 18.9mbp/s up, Not too shabby Smile

Need to figure out how i'm going to set the network up (I really hate ISP supplied routers, so that will be the first thing to go......)

Anyway, We should be back in business in the next couple of days Smile

Ok, things are slowly going back up, I'm working on the web services first, FTP will be done tomorrow when I have figured out the best way to migrate the data onto the new server (I have decided to go for Windows Server 2012 R2 on it, which complicates things a little as all my drives are HFS+ formatted...)
Wired will take a few days to go back up

Take your time Wink
As long as things are working out without any larger issues you should be fine.

What about Wired though? Unless you have a fancy server build unknownst to me Tongue

I'm probably going to run it in a Debian VM, I was going to run Debian straight on the hardware, however I got about 3% of the way through the setup then I remembered how lazy I am and decided to take the easy way out Smile

However I have just thought of one kinda big problem, I have made extensive use of the characters * and | in folder names to make them appear where I want them to in folder listings, these are illegal characters in both NTFS and ReFS. Looks like I have a lot of renaming to do tomorrow......

Sounds like a whole lot of fun, though, I don't really envy you Smile
Though Linux is a whole lot friendlier when it comes to peculiar names on files / folders Tongue

The ext4 filesystem allows any character for filename except slash ("/") and null byte ("\0"). (so * and | will work)
I think you should go with either Debian or FreeBSD as host OS and vsFTPd as FTP server.
It may take a while the first time, but after the first time, it's easy to set up in the subsequent times.

Ok, FTP and web files should now be back up. If you get directory not found errors in your FTP client please refresh the directory listing in your FTP client (as the directory names are different now)

Only the mg and mr accounts are on the server right now, Personal accounts will be migrated in the coming days.

All self registered accounts will be dropped (as they where available only to work round a bug in CrushFTP, I am now running on Rumpus so this is no longer a problem)

Ok, Most user accounts are now on there, If your account had special privileges (Or somehow ended up in the wrong group) you'll have to wait a few days

This ended up being much easier that I thought it would be, Just had to dust off my VB.Net skills to write a quick conversion program and that pretty much did it all

Hey Max1zzz, when attempting to download Myst 3 off you server, the file hangs halfway through the download. Think you could help me out with this problem?

Sure, Where you trying to download it with the web interface of with FTP? Also where about on the server is the file, I can't seem to find it.....

ok, anything on the files account should now work Smile

I say should as for some reason ftp ing into the server on my local network using the external address doesn't work so I can't test it fully

Ok, now all I get is a "Safari can’t open the page “ftp://files:files@max1zzz.co.uk/Myst%20III%20Exile/EXILE_Disc_2.toast.sit”. The error is: “unknown error” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1) Please choose Safari > Report Bugs to Apple, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message." message when I try to download.

Don't know if this is helping, but;
– using FireFox v48 opening your FTP-link starts downloading the file,
– using Safari v9.1.2 and the FULL FTP-link gives the same error message (in my native language) described above,
– using Safari and a STRIPPED FTP-link, i.e. 'ftp://files:files@max1zzz.co.uk' opens a new blank page in Safari and opens a FTP client, on my machine Fetch, logged in at Max's.

I'm running MacOS 10.10.5

Try using Opera as the browser (see my comments on the Myst Exile page). Worked for me last night.

The FTP Links have always been somewhat flakey. If you can't get it to work just ftp into the server and login with the user / pass files / files and you'll be able to see and download everything

I'll have a look tonight though and see if there is anything I can do

Edit: Just tested it from firefox and chrome, Both worked fine so it may just be safari (I have pc's at work so can't test with it atm)

Hmm, I can't seem to replicate this, on my macbook, If I browse to ftp://files:files@10.0.0.2:89/Myst%20III%20Exile/EXILE_Disc_2.toast.sit (Exact same address you have been trying, apart from I have substituted the internal address of the server) on my macbook running safari 9.1.2 the file downloads fine.

Perhaps try clearing your cache?

I've successfully downloaded it with Firefox (TenFourFox to be specific), however now it tells me the archives are incomplete. Seems like it's one problem after another.

I'm using The Unarchiver. It provides grater support for other/older formats than the built-in archive utility.

Hmm ok, Is it disk 2 that is failing? and can you give me the md5 of the file (the md5 command in terminal will do this)
