Another thing that comes to mind is that you mention 3 hard disks identical in size, i can almost bet that they are in raid 5 array, and that justifies the "sata card". Must be a raid card.

The card is listed as a "500605B" seems to be a lsi sata chip

Ebay item no is: 111245876717, you should be able to find the listing from that

Server will be down this weekend for a bit

Had a little trouble with the new xserve (Logicboard somehow got damaged in shipping) one new MLB later and it's up and running (The seller paid the cost of the new MLB + a bit more so it's good)

Server will be down today while i migrate the final bits of software over to the g5

The data now resides on a 2TB disk, so there's plenty of room for expansion (and i plan to expand it allot over the coming months)

If you have uploaded anything after wednesday of this week can you please email me or leave a message here - as the data was transfered on wednesday

Hi Max, there's a problem with approx. 250 files on your ftp.
Transfer fails with "550 File not found, access denied."
Most of them are located into MacOS Classic/Games directory.

Max,
Looking a bit closer, I realise that either the server or my client (filezilla) did something wrong by setting up an incorrect D/L queue, putting files in the wrong directory. I'll let you know if the problem happens again. Smile

wondering about using these bios chip "top hat" sockets would allow me to swap chips on 3112 cards to be able to take the seritek 1s2 rom.. as i know JACK about soldering;) and i dont have magnifying glass, or hot air solder tools etc etc

I would first off try the webie firmware first, as it was reported that that is actually bootable, and has no flash id checks (you'll need to use the dos based flasher as the webie one normally dosen't work)

you can't entirely avoid soldering, even if you used one of these top hat sockets you still need to change the power jumper for the flash chip to 3.3v

And.... We have another server transfer comeing up in a couple of months

Although it wasn't long ago i moved to the xserve g5 i am accutley aware of the fact i am now running a 7 year old release of mac os and security is a bit of a concern.

So i have decided to take the plunge and move off apple hardware for hosting and have purchased a dell poweredge 2950 (which in the comeing months will be upgraded to 2 quad core xeons, 12 or 20GB of ram and lots and lots of storage)

I did consider a intel xserve but you just get so much more bang for your buck with the pc's, and everything runs on linux fine so why not use a pc Wink

Ok, if anyone here is interested - I am currently looking for a co-admin (primarily someone who can take care of the self registered accounts, which need manual activation and possibly do a bit of sorting (But i wouldn't expect you to do any more than i do, aka almost nothing))

Needs to be someone who is a fairly regular user here / elsewhere i might know you from (aka it needs to be someone i can trust with admin access)

thanks

I would but I currently have a large mess to sort myself lol but once I'm satisfied with how I've sorted things I could assist a bit.

I assume your server has a raid card and not just a sas/sata controller? If so, beware of making a raid 5 array with more than three HD's. The PERC card included on those models (29xx) behave horribly slow if you have a raid 5 array with more than 3 disks. Firmware updates don't fix the problem. If you have only a sas/sata controller, check if it is using a pci slot or embedded in the motherboard, the slot one has a 1500uf capacitor that tends to get "fat" and cause your server to go down. However, that capacitor is super easy to change.

Yeah it has a perc5i raid card, the card isn't built into the board but it isn't a pci card either (it's the card that sits at the front left of the server)

I'm only planning to do raid 0 sets with two disks (2x 73gb 15K SAS for boot / vm's, 2 x 1TB and 2 X 2TB (I still need to cheack that the 5i will actually support 2TB disks or if i need to get it a 6i card)

Bio and a bit about me:

Just letting everyone know I am helping Max1zzz on his system and Co-Admin'ing with him. I wanted to help with the Mac Community and this is the way I could do my part. I have experience and a have a BA in Computer Security, which in simple language is a Degree as a Certified Hacker.I first started in the field in 1981 on a Commodore Pet learning basic, and began learning to hack on a C-64,to where I am now. I do not do illegal things, do not ask me about them as I will not show you anything period. I can however assist you in securing your system and provide support for other computer related issues.I work in the field as a freelance and have my own company in Iowa which deals with exotic breed tortoises I breed Sulcatas, and Russians at this time, and will be expanding the facility to house other types of tortoises. I feel that if there is anything I can do to help anyone in the Mac Community please ask this goes for the site owners as well as I have some experience in Web Design and Joomla.

Once again Thanks goes to Max1zzz and the rest of the community for giving me this chance and all the hard work on every site to make the Mac community a better place for all of us!

Can I download the entire server amd put it on bittorrent?

And i must say thanks to ckilla for doing all the boring jobs i normally can't be bothered to do Smile
It is really appreciated, and finally people signing up for self registered accounts will actually have them activated

@uyjulian: I won't say no (I'm not one of these admins that think they "own" the data, it's on here to be downloaded and shared) but i would advise against it, it would take ages to download & upload (we are closing in on 600GB of data, but i have enough offline data to go up to at least 750GB) and will quickly loose sync with whats on the server. But i would strongly encourage you to make torrents of individual files - the more sources of data the better Smile

Don't worry, it took me a while to download the entire apple asimov archive

Ok, i guess my real concern is i don't like people makeing carbon copy's of my server (What Uberfox is doing is what i like, i.e downloading everything and absorbing it into his way of sharing the files).
By all means download it all and make torrents of individual files, but i wouldn't be so enthusiastic about a single torrent of the hole server (besides which, a single torrent of the hole server isn't really that usefull)

You can select which file to download in one torrent.
Some torrent clients have trouble with TONS of files, however.

The dell didn't work out (way too loud to use in a home enviroment) So i picked up this beast instead:

It's the original 2006 model, with 9GB of ram and 2 x 2.66GHZ DC Xeon 5150's (will be upgraded to dual quad cores when i have the money)

Forced mavericks on it which runs really really well, except it didn't like the 7300gt card that was in it, pinched the spare Nvidia GT120 from my dad's mac pro (which is a 64Bit EFI card so i get no boot screen, but it works) and it's running perfectly Smile

Anyhow the server will be down tomorrow while i migrate (Yeah yeah, i know i always say that and never take the server down, but it will be tomorrow)

This is what I use for my front end server on my website, I however do not like Mavericks and it was too quirky for me, I instead went to something more stable that felt like a real server Snow Leopard 10.6 Unlimited and it has been fine. I do not like the add on package of OSX 3.0 I think thats crappy it does not feel like a server to me. Hey but each to their own, I do have 2 Dell Servers here I am running back end One is a Windows Enterprise, and the other a Storage with over 10TB and I have an additional 4TB from a USB available as well. So I am all set. That machine when set up is a beast. Mine Had an ASUS GS card in it I tossed it in the box and went back to the 7300GT as it stopped me from seeing anything on the screen. It has 8GB Ram and Im looking to max this puppy out and it has Dual Cores already on it. That should do you quite fine Smile

Well 10.6 is my go to version of mac os normally, but it is getting a bit old (and thats the hole reason i upgraded from the G5 and leopard server) so i thought i might as well get it up and running with mavericks before apple stop me being able to buy the mavericks server app (and force us to use yosmite - that iOS 7 look is something i can never learn to like)

But yeah, with the stock 7300gt mavericks was really quirky, it's much more happy with the gt120

and yeah this thing is a beast alright, already flying with 9GB of ram and 2 2.66Ghz dual cores, just imagine how fast it will be when i get it 32GB of ram and 2 2.66Ghz quad cores

Yeah all is good now (apart from our ISP forcing a new IP on us at 1:30 AM this morning, we had managed to keep the old one for the best part of a year), sorted out the problems with MacOS on the Pro. Just need to install the server app for mavericks and upgrade crushFTP to version 7 (which i just haven't done yet as they cost money...)

I got the 4,1 model (dual-Quad), which was moddable to a 5,1 firmware. After jumping through MBR hoops just to get ACHI working on Boot Camp, I couldn't get the throughput for graphics under Windows side.

I traded it for a Dell XPS Core i7, and just in time, as it was showing signs of flaking out.

I traded the silent i7 for my old custom MSI Core-i5, and it is a perfect Hackintosh and Win7 PC (if a bit noisy).

It has 16GB DDR3 1600 RAM and 2GB GTX 660. I also now have aCore-i3 Acer Aspire 4752 which makes a very capable MacBook Pro (similar to 8,1). My install guide for both is on insanelymac forum.

Well the mac pro itself is compleatley stable, the problem is that i screwed up the premissions on the boot drive in a really bad way and OSX can't seem to repair them. (hopefully i can repair them when i'm booted from the installer, if not it will need a clean install....)

The pro basically is a hackintosh anyway Smile it shouldn't boot mavericks and it needs a modified bootloader to boot anyway

max1zzz the server is slow.I download with speeds 20kb/s...Please if you can fix it.

The guest account is capped to 60kb/s, but crushFTP is really crap at enforcing the speed limit correctly (hopefully crushFTP 7 should fix this, will be doing software upgrades later this week)

If you can find something to upload i can create you a personal account with no speed limits ( crushFTP is fine when there is no speed limit)

erm, no. The speed limits are there for a reason (it's just a pitty crush has trouble enforcing them correctly) What you need to consider is that i home host this, if i let everyone have a unlimited DL speed there would be no bandwidth for the rest of the family to use.

I can't just give everyone a unlimited dl speed like i did in the very early days, it just wouldn't be feasible

Hi Max, Re the classic dev disks in |Developer disks|

These two appear to be the same:
Dev.CD Oct 93 SSW.toast.sit. . . Jul 14 2012 406225k
DeveloperCD_ssw_10-93.toast.sit. Jul 14 2012 376392k

Despite the difference in "k" reported in the directory, they both have the same content, file size and MD5 checksums once extracted from the .sit -- 31838c6d12b002f3cf5b1410065e26b6

Frees up a few hundred MB's if one should go.

Can i ask people to search before uploading - i'm currently having to chuck around half of uploads because they are duplicates. Space on the main drive is not a problem, but the backup drive is half the size of the main one (I will sort this out at some point, but 2TB drives are still kinda expensive)

The web interface has a search function as dose wired, some FTP clients also do (but it's kinda clunky as FTP dosen't give the client a file listing)

Hi Max
You can remove two toast images (one from each pair) from the Apple Dev's page that I've wasted bandwidth on DL'ng, so far.

[1] Dev.CD Oct 93 SSW.toast.sit. . . Jul 14 2012 406225k
[1] DeveloperCD_ssw_10-93.toast.sit. Jul 14 2012 376392k

[2] Dev.CD Dec 96 Disk 2.gz. . . . . Jul 14 2012 318391k
[2] Dev.CD Dec 96 RL.toast.gz. . . . Jul 14 2012 289546k

Despite the difference in "k" given in the directory, each pair has the same content, file size and MD5 checksums once extracted from the .sit's and .gz's

Perhaps you could create another page here at the garden specifically for folks to report duplicates as they come across them at Max1zzz's? It could be similar to the Garden's own duplicates sticky. This page has been useful for the Garden's archives.

Will do, And i thought i had gone through the Dev CD's and removed all the dupes a couple of years ago, guess i was wrong Smile

And yeah i can look into doing that, only problem is i have had trouble actually getting people to report problems with the FTP in the past

ugh... may have to take the server down tommrow. Getting i/o errors on the backup disk and the backup script has vanished (which oddly, was on a differen't disk)

Hopefully it's just a glitch with the SAS controller (as both are connected to that) Even if it has gone bad i have a spare. It's if a disk / disks are bad that is a problem, past experiance has told me it is bad to run without backups. So if the disk is bad i will have to take the server down till a new disk is sourced.

Anyhow, hopefully it isn't the disk (the smart data has no bad sectors logged and the last error is from me knocking the data connector out the drive while it was running back in 2011 Smile )

Bad news, the drive is stuffed.

The server will remain up while i see if the drive is still useable (most drives can reallocate a couple of hundred blocks) But it looks like it is time for a new drive...

Ok, overnight the drive has died completely, it will no longer mount.

I will proabley have to take the server down tonight (as i don't think i have a spare disk big enough to back up the main drive)

EDIT: We are back in business, just replaced the drive with a 2TB WD Red Smile
