10.6.3 retail won't work?
I'll take a look through my collection.
Don't you want to be running El Capitan eventually?

What make year does booting with option+R? command+R? start working to perform an automatic restore over the internet?

I have disk images for Snow Leopard 10.6.3, Lion and Mt. Lion.
Once you install any of those you can upgrade to El Capitan online.

You sure did see this?

Its for the Mac Mini, but maybe it can be patched for your MBP?

Thanks all. I have High Sierra on in now and really want a SL partition for ppc games. I have a 10.6.3 retail disc but it does not boot - I assumed the machine came with 10.6.4?

I have already created a compatible partition ready for it.

I’ll also try internet recovery but I thought was only for Lion and above?

According to Everymac.com all the 2010 MacBook Pros came with 10.6.3 installed.
Do you get any kind of error message when you try to boot 10.6.3 retail?

Here are 10.6.4 and 10.6.6 DVD images, which also look promising to me - iMac, i know. Wink

With some grey install DVD images, it was just needed to edit a .plist to allow installation on unsupported hardware. Others here will know the how to.

Thanks all. I've downloaded a number of installer discs and tried modifying the plist using pacifist, but I'm afraid this is beyond my understanding Sad

Does anyone have a copy for the machine they can upload (i just missed out on a genuine copy on eBay)?

I was able to create a modified "grey" disc by following the hints on this Insanely Mac forum. It wasn't too difficult to do after reading this.

Which OS would you like to install finally 10.6.4 or 10.6.6?
I would give it a go, but my ISP (Telekom) is finagling around with my bandwidth worse than before.
Pushing around a 8GB file will take a really long time (24h estimated DL), maybe someone else volunteers?
Editing the installation check script should be feasible methinks.

What about installing a stock 10.7 on your MBP and proceed from there?
You may also install onto an external FW or USB drive, if Lion is not the final goal.

If you do not need Rosetta, Lion should be good enough to resuscitate your MBP.

Edit:
Seems like Apple is still selling 10.7 for reasonable $ 19.99 - I did not try to purchase though.
