Mac software catalog

Hey everyone,

I have a sort of weird question. Like others here, I'm always prowling looking for more old software. I've learned that finding the name of an application can often be trickier than finding the application itself. What I mean is, I know there's more software in general I'd love to have out there, but I don't know the names of it.

For example, I like "UI Customization" utilities -- custom cursors, scrollbar patterns, window colors, etc (eg ClickChange). I've been collecting them for years, so you'd think I'd have seen them all by now, or at least I did. Then I read a random readme file that happened to mention 2 similar utilities I'd never heard of. Now knowing their names, I was able to start tracking them down.

Then I wondered, could there be a kind of "master list" that lists all the Mac software published around 1989 - 1998. I'm mostly thinking of commercial products since free/shareware tends to be easier to find other ways. With this list I'd know the names of the applications I'm hunting, which is half the battle.

I've never heard of such a list, but it sounds plausible. I don't know who'd have made it or where it would be, which is where I'm hoping you guys can help. Obviously it doesn't have to be "complete", just any kind of software list.

The only idea I have as a potential source is like an (old) computer magazine OR some kind of old software "catalog", though I'm not sure how to even check that out.

We all know there's more great stuff out there waiting to be discovered. I want to help bring even more unique and rare titles to the thriving Mac Garden community!

I'm especially interested in applications over games, though either would be appreciated.

Thanks for any input you guys can offer!

Gonzo

If you find enough of the info-mac style digests, and manage to sort them correctly by date, you will have a small subset of freeware/shareware/demos. Other than that, some compilation CDs of shareware would be your most likely source.

There is a 16GB torrent just released here, that should cover EVERYTHING you could possibly need. Just start the torrent, then stop it, and you should have a nice listing of everything you could want.

Just a thought.

See this forum topic.

16GB is of course just a drop in the bucket. It would need more like 16TB. Smile

The English magazine MacFormat at one stage included a database of the software included on their cover disks and CDs / DVs, but it didn't last that long and was again really only shareware / freeware.

I doubt there's a full list of commercial software anywhere. The closest you get is probably at places like MacUpdate and VersionTracker (taken over by CNET). Someone at Apple may still have a list of all the official Creator Codes.

Yeah... I used to get these magazines like "MacMall" or something like that, basically like a supplier's catalogue of Mac hardware/software. Used to be lists of software in there. Unfortunately I don't think I have any copies anymore...

Also, this is a pretty funny suggestion, but serial number lists like Hacker's Helper and Surfer's Serials would probably actually be a pretty good definitive listing of Mac software from the 80's-90's as well....! haha

Those serial number lists won't be complete either since there are things missing from them (and not only anything that didn't require a serieal number), but they could be a good starting point too.

Tucows once had a decent Mac section. It may still be available in a particular country?
