Mac OS 8.7 Image Question

I'm pretty sure some of you have already seen this, because the link to this site has been posted here on MacGarden:

http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=b88e2ce4ed1308ff91b20cc0d07ba4d2499b7...

As you can see, there is an OS 8.7 image on that site. After downloading, here's what I've found:

- It can't mounted with DiskImageMounter in OSX because I get a "Codec Overrun" message.
- It can be mounted in Toast 5.2, but the image can't be burned due to the Codec Overrun.
- It can be mounted using DiskUtility
- The image verifies successfully using DiskUtility
- Aside from the codec overrun issue, this appears to be a clean copy of the original CD (Desktop_DB and DF are original dates).

Does anyone have any suggestions what to do about this?

Mac OS 8.7 either must be a fake or a beta, because Mac OS 8.7 was released as Mac OS 9.0.

Burn it and re-image with OSX Disk Utility, or Toast ?

TemporaryJoe, it does look to be a beta now that you mention it. The file name is Mac_OS_8.7a6c2.

All the files are dated June, 1999. After a little research I've found that 8.6 was released in May, 1999. So this does look like a beta.

bertyboy, I'll see what happens. Smile

Yeah, it's definitely beta.

I installed 8.7a6c2 in SheepShaver some time ago. I'm guessing I have the same image. But I just copied it to a blank hfv file, mounted the image (Disk Copy or Shrinkwrap, can't remember now) and installed from that. It's basically a beta of OS9 (in the same way early versions of OS8 were 7.7)

Thanks Protocol 7, that is very helpful information. I'll give that a shot. I'm just curious about it more than anything else, thought it would be neat to test drive in SheepShaver. Smile

You can also test drive 8.2 the same way. That one has the themes that never made it into 8.5.
