Looking for color toolbar icons for Word 5.1a?

Once upon a time, Microsoft Word made Word 5.1, and it came with a brand new toolbar. It was fabulous, but some felt it needed color. So an enterprising person made a patch/modified component that added color to the toolbar icons.

I came across the patch shortly after Word 5.1a came out in '93. I have scoured all online sources I know of looking for the patch, but nothing. Not a thing; it's like it never existed. I most likely got it off the AOL shareware board.

If anyone remembers it and has a copy, it would be great to get it back! It looks very nice when you compare it to the original black and white Word toolbar.

Well, I found the color toolbar. I have put it on the page Microsoft Word (3-5) that has 5.1a on it

Thank you, Mr. Dav! You never know when something will go missing and our circle is here to stand on the gap of oblivion

The Word 5.1a installer refused to work, so I copied the 5.1a application from the install disks and copied it to the 5.0 folder, saving the 5.0 version elsewhere, then I moved the color toolbar into the commands folder and used 'Personalize Word' to remove the glitch at startup. Does this mean I've basically installed Word 5.1a? Funny enough, everything appears to be working perfectly, including the color toolbar! I guess any other differences would be so minor that they may not even be noticeable?

I also came across a completely unexpected item: apparently, Microsoft has kept Word 5.5. for DOS available for download to address the y2k bug since the '90s!

Thanks for finding it, mrdav. It has lifted the appearance of my 5.1a copy nicely.

Wow, that's excellent! I'm glad to suggest that little gem! It's my favorite word processor along with WriteNow. Yes, this was a 'must have' from my old AOL days

This add-on really helped modernize it back in the day. I also remember using a memory-fixing patch for Word 5.1a, I think for running it on OS 9. I'll look for it since any help to make it more useful on Classic Macs, the better!
