King's Quest (AGI original) - did it ever work in color?

Did the original King's Quest ever work in color on actual Macintosh hardware? Or was it a black & white only release?

In Mini vMac I tried the three resolutions of 512x342 (original Mac), 512x384 (I think that's the default Mac II resolution) and 640x480, all in 16 colors, but the graphics always come out distorted. It only works properly in black & white in 512x342 resolution. Same problem occurs in SheepShaver and Basilisk II.

The reason I ask is that Space Quest has the same distortion and only works in color in 640x480. I remember my Mac LC used to display the same distorted color graphics because it was using the non-standard resolution of 640x400. I had to run the game in black and white on that machine despite having a color monitor.

It seems that setting the resolution at 640x480 with 16 colors works for all the other AGI games released for the Mac, except for the original King's Quest. I am using the version uploaded here on the Macintosh Garden, which may be an early release that was subsequently patched, but I cannot track down any newer versions anywhere online.

Does anyone have a version newer than 1.10 (March 1987)?

(I realize you can feed the files into ScummVM and see it in color, but it is not an authentic experience because it uses the PC cursor and menu, and the Mac sound emulation in ScummVM is quite bad at the moment)

Correct on all counts. A 16-color Mac version of King's Quest 1 was available as of 1988, but has yet to surface online.
