EA Games May Finally be Coming to Their Senses Now

So I was browsing around the web today, and I came across THIS! Apparently, EA is now releasing SimCity 2000 as abandonware. Although I don't see anything about Macs anywhere in the article, I'm assuming it applies to them as well.

I'm glad that EA is finally realizing that many people adore abandonware. Hopefully they'll do the same for their other great titles in the future.

Best regards,

EA hasn't specified how long the game will be available for free, only saying users should "act quickly" to download it. It has previously offered other games for free via Origin, including Peggle and Dead Space. So grab it now to while away the hours for the holiday.

Hmm... methinks its a season's "sweetener"...

I was kinda thinking the same thing, MikeTomTom. Well, at least we can get the PC version while it's up.

It's also only through origin, though apparently you can just copy the files out after downloading it and you have the original files. I refuse to install origin just to get the game, but then I have a legit copy of simcity 2000 Mac Smile

I wouldn't expect EA to soften it's position on abandonware.

It's unfortunate that EA has to be this way, and I have the DOS version of SimCity 2000 already, I just thought I throw out the news to everybody in case they wanted to get a copy.

A lot of PC games are actually made by a different company for the Mac, so EA may not have the rights to give them away (nor block them on here for that matter). I've got SimCity 2000 - The Ultimate City Simulator CD Collection for the Mac, but nowhere on teh CD box nor the disc does it mention EA at all, just Maxis. (It doesn't even mention Mac at all!! Possibly it's a dual format disc, but I've never bothered to check it in a PC.)

Maxis is owned by EA. We cannot put up any Maxis stuff. Have a look at this thread.

Technically that letter says "EA games" and "PC Games" ... this is a "Maxis game" (no mention anywhere of "EA") and a Mac game. Based purely on that letter, a lawyer would tell you that it's not relevant. Smile

If Balrog thinks it is relevant, that is all we have to concern ourselves with. Smile

I'm not saying you should actually ignore it at all ... simply that a real lawyer would have a field day with the highly imprecise wording of that "legal" letter and easily get any legal proceedings based on that thrown out (at least until EA got a real lawyer to write a proper precisely worded, and probably difficult to understand, letter). Basically that letter is just an EA employee trying to bully people into doing what they ask, rather than an actual legal letter demanding someone to do something.
