Disinfectant

I tried to run my powerbook 3400c with disinfectant and while scanning the disk the hard drive started making weird noises so I shut it off. Is it suppose to do that? Thanks

Disinfectant app has 2 sounds in the application resources and they are both used by the About window, so no.

"Weird noises" coming from a hard drive is usually a sign that it's having problems.

Sometimes it may just be a software corruption, so it might be fixed by running a disk utility to repair issues or reformatting (after doing a backup, separate from any normal regular backups!) reinstalling the software and documents, either from fresh or from a backup.

Other times it's a hardware issue. Reformatting may help (it will mark bad blocks so they can't be used) for a while, but often it means you need a replacement drive.

"Hard drive started making weird noises", to me, translates to "hard drive is about to die for good". This may be an inconvenient suggestion on my part, but I'd seriously consider replacing the hard drive (after transfering files over / backing it up) and try again. Disinfectant by itself, especially a version sourced from this site, shouldn't be the actual culprit of such noises.

Those are my two cents.

Thanks. The hard drive never made those noises before it was like ticking. Now everything is fine when i stopped the program. Mabie i should back up but i never heard it again just while i ran repair on disenfectant. I used a old version from system 7.1 on 9.0
