Claris XTND System

Hello Folks,

I got a funky thing happening with my Claris applications (also impacting AppleWorks).
As soon as I put "Claris XTND System" (v1.3.x) into the Claris folder under the System folder (even if its the only file inside of "Claris") then none of the Claris/AppleWorks apps can start anymore.
They all get either stuck during initialization or will outright terminate with an exception.

As soon as I move said file out of the Claris folder (and put the other files back in) all apps start up w/o problem. What exactly does that file do?

PS: Needless to say that this "used to work". Wink

A number of programs may use the Claris XTND System, not only Claris apps. It's the engine for the file translators, so it's vital that it runs properly.

It was (well known?) back in the old days of Claris that there were some files that could become corrupted and would stop Claris programs from working.

However, the fix was simple and you can remove those files without hurting your Claris apps, as these files get recreated fresh when you start the program again.

For this step, your Claris app[s] should be Quit and not running.

Move the following files to the Trash and delete them:

XTND Translator List <-- file located in the Preferences folder inside the System Folder

Any file that mentions the word "Fonts" in their file name <-- for files located inside of the Claris folder inside the System Folder.
These can be named for example: "Claris Fonts", "ClarisWorks Fonts", "Claris Font Map", etc, etc

The next time you start up ClarisWorks etc, all should be well.

Thx a lot! The culprit was the "XTND Translator List" file in the Prefs folder. But on top of that I had to revert back to Claris XTND System 1.3 from June 1991 to make this work. Any clue if there is a more recent version of that file that works with AppleWorks 5.0.3 ?

PS: Seems like AW doesn't want to open plain DOS text files, as they won't show up in the "File Open" dialog.

Claris XTND System, as installed by both ClarisWorks 5 or AppleWorks 5.0.3 is version 1.3.6

Trash the "XTND Translator List" file each time you swap or introduce different versions of the Claris XTND System file, else you might assume it doesn't work when maybe there nothing wrong with it. Don't discount bad font files as potential culprits either. AppleWorks creates a "AppleWorks Fonts" file in an "AppleWorks" folder, also located in the "Preferences" folder - trash it too.

Another Claris program, ClarisDraw, checks for bad fonts and lists them, which can be useful in weeding out potential Claris/AppleWorks trouble-makers.

Regarding your PS:
AppleWorks can open DOS plain text files. The problem you might experience is that when bringing over files from outside of Basilisk II, you are probably bypassing Apple's "PC Exchange" software and they are not being given Macintosh Creator Type and File Type associations that are useful to AppleWorks.

Instead, use a Creator Type & File Type changing program such as Creator Changer to quickly give files like this, a suitable Creator Type & File Type association, which you can then simply double-click to launch a given program.

If you install the above Creator Changer, also make use of the Preferences file included in with that download. It already has AppleWorks Text (and Ms Word Text) set up for quick access.

I used MacLink Plus to adjust the Type ID for said text file, but as it seems that didn't suffice. Is there any way I could get my hands on the 1.3.6 version of that file, w/o having to reinstall AppleWorks from scratch?

Use Creator Changer or any other tool, even ResEdit if you must.

The Creator Type = BOBO
The File Type = TEXT

Case is sensitive.

Greg's Browser also lets you edit creator and file type info.

I restored version 1.3.6 from backup and transformed the text file to an RTF - which got recognized just fine.
