Emulation
This app works with: SheepShaver, Basilisk II,

vMac (not to be confused with Mini vMac) is a free software emulator that emulates the Apple Macintosh Plus.
That means that vMac does not cost anything, and does not use any hardware.
A lot of the Macintosh Plus' functionality is already implemented in this port, and that includes:

There were vMac builds available for Windows 9X/NT, GNU/Linux, Mac OS and some more.
The vMac sites are down meanwhile and though the Internet Archive captured the pages, source code and executables are not available.
Would be a shame if this piece of software would be lost in digital nirvana, so they are available from here now.

A note about the downloads available from above:

  1. file is the DOS port
  2. file is the Win32 port
  3. file is the fat Macintosh version for 68k and PowerPC
  4. file is the carbon version for Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X (PowerPC only)

As you may have noticed from the screenshot, vMac runs Vampire Castle — otherwise unplayable with Mac emulators.
Like Fusion PC, this app obviously took another approach to Mac emulation than e.g. Christian Bauer's apps, where speed had top priority, sacrificing compatibility here and there a bit.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC PPC (Carbonized) x86 (Windows)

Be warned that Mac emulation is really slow in VirtualBox/DOS.

The system requirements for the DOS build of vMac are:

Oh Nice one. I hadn't even bothered to check, I had just assumed it would naturally be down. How nice of the dev to continue to host the site! That's commitment. I will get that on to the waybackmachine, just in case.

X-Windows seems to be the Linux versions. I don't think there were any unix ports hosted there.

BTW, http://vmac.org/download/ still works.

on bin and tgz noted. Forgot that one, and yes it did pull down some more. I also added txt to get any readme files or other old mailing lists.

Yes I can see the NeXT versions and what appears to be x-windows, or is that the same.

Looking through some backups if you add bin and tgz archives you might find more.

I have NeXT and Linux versions here with the tgz extension.

Interesting note on Mac Plus software having such an exclusive footprint — I didn't know that tidbit. Thanks for sharing!

interestingly, I came across Richard Bannister's name relative to vMac so I went to the waybackmachine and these came down:

vmac-019a.sit.hqx
vmac-019b.sit.hqx

How can I upload these to you? I am assuming they are older versions?

These are definitely on the Internet Archive. I just downloaded them all.

First run this in your terminal.
$ gem install wayback_machine_downloader

cd into a directory and then issue the following command:

wayback_machine_downloader -p 10000 -f 19980709053236 -t 20071103065212 -c 5 --only "/\.(zip|hqx|sit|pdf)$/i" http://vmac.org/
Downloading http://vmac.org/ to websites/vmac.org/ from Wayback Machine archives.

This is what came down less than a minute later.

with flawlessly working sound.

Now that is interesting, given the sound issues with the modern Mini vMac ports. Thanks for your tests, 24bit.

Thanks for digging out the files!
I´ll try the W32 build soon.
The W32 port works like a charm in VirtualBox. Same for the carbonised one in MacOS9/SheepShaver.
Quite fast with flawlessly working sound.

Remember a description of this in a German Macintosh magazine named "MacMagazin",
asking themselves "But why would you want to emulate a Mac on a Mac?"
If they've read the included readme file, they would know the answer:
Because Macintosh Plus software isn't compatible to any newer Macintosh models, including later 68k ones.
