Guides on emulating older applications

ShapeShifter is a haxie (Mac OS X hack) in the form of an Application Enhancer (APE) plugin for Mac OS X that allows the user to make system-wide modifications to the appearance of the operating system's graphical interface by applying GUI skins through “injection” into running code and without modifying system files, very much like Kaleidoscope or WindowBlinds. It uses GUIKit files (called “themes”) which can contain interface elements, desktop backgrounds and icons. (Wikipedia)

There are numerous versions available on the old Unsanity website via the Wayback Machine. However, only the key versions are uploaded here. There is no point in uploading them all. Version 1.0 was released in 2003; hence the date on this page.

Download #1 is v. 1.2 (released 2004) which is the last 1.x version for Mac OS X 10.2 - 10.3

To register version 1.2 use the following:
Name: Buck Rogers
Password: NASA
Code: ckdpfcicu

Download #2 is v. 2.1 (released 2005) for Mac OS X 10.2 - 10.4 and is the last version to support Mac OS X 10.2

Download #3 is v. 2.3.1 (released 2006) for Mac OS X 10.3 - 10.4 and is the last version to support Mac OS X 10.3

Download #4 contains plists with which to register versions 2.1 and 2.3.1 by moving the plist files from their folders in the download to the corresponding folders on your Mac.

The versions in downloads 1-3 are PPC binaries

Download #5 contains the final version (v. 2.5), released 2007. It is a Universal Binary for PPC and Intel processors, and specifically requires Mac OS X 10.4.x. It is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or above. The registration code for v. 2.5 is included in the download.

Download #6 contains a large collection of ShapeShifter themes.

Download #7 It's an added archive of 71 ShapeShifter themes, most of which comes from the MacGui site. They have dedicated pages for ShapeSifter themes. unfortunately majority were hosted on external servers, authors sites or now dead old ResExcellence forums and others… these I couldn't find a way to get them.
But, about a third is hosted on the MacGui site server, grabbed the ones not included and/or of diffenent versions than in Download #6 and posted here as a single archive with MacGui's agreement. Note each theme previews are visible on the MacGui dedicated pages.

It would be nice to have a good Jaguar theme for Tiger! The Janther 1.1 theme doesn't work.
Is there a way to have the Finder, mail, system settings and other apps themed with a pinstrips look??

We had dark modes in 10.4, heck we had rainbow modes! Sadly with OS updates you had reasonable trouble with this if a current version wasn't out, but it's still amazing software to this day!

Shapeshifter allowed me to make a large number of discoveries about how Tiger theming worked via the Extras.rsrc and Finder.rsrc files (and other minor resources, like iTunes resource files). You can actually apply a theme with Shapeshifter, then copy the resources that the theme uses and apply them without even needing Shapeshifter. It was with this knowledge that I put together (with a lot of help from others on the MacRumors PowerPC forum) the Tiger Sierra theme to reskin Tiger for a more modern look.
