Emulation
Guides on emulating older applications

The Grouch 2.5B1 is a system extension that sings and has Oscar pop out "Oh I love trash!" and "I love it because it's trash!" alternating every time the trash is emptied. This is older than the 2.5B3 that has always been around long ago. I have tested this on my PowerBook Duo 230 using Mac OS 7.6 and it works great! Does not work in anything newer than 7.6.1. Took me FOREVER to find this so ENJOY!!

The first download is version 2.5b1. The second download is a DiskCopy 4.2 image (compressed with StuffIt 4.0) that contains versions 2.0b8, 2.5b1 & 2.5b3.

The third, fourth and fifth download are early versions and standalone version as found on Hacks CD.

The sixth download is the stand-alone Grouch version 2.5b2 and the seventh are the Grouch sound files.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC

Runs in B/W and Color. Mac OS 6-7.6.1

Found (another) stand-alone Grouch version. Didn't realize that there was a stand-alone already among the downloads! It kind of worked in Basilisk II Mac OS 8.1, in millions of colors as well (it didn't crash at least) Smile

It would be relatively easy to make such an application (for modern Macs too) ... IF you can get the images and sound out of the original via ResEdit.

There have been various requests and even petitions to try and get a version of Grouch made for OS X.

I remember that most likely the developer of this extension also made a grouch program so that kids wouldn't put files in the trash from the hard drive. And being an application, it may work within Mac OS 8 and higher.

If anyone knows where it might be or happens to have it stashed anywhere, it'd be fun and safer for kids to use because when you open the program, oscar the grouch comes out and sings just like this extension does, but without needing to delete anything!

Seeing this app here brings back some great memories. When I was a youngster, I would make 'new folder' after 'new folder' just to delete them and see the Grouch emerge from the bin and give me a little song. Great stuff.

Very nice find. I was a couple of years too old for Sesame Sreet, but it was a shame The Grouch got censored in the German transcription.
Could it be The Grouch is tending to crash SheepShaver frequently?

Hehe. You have to have been around when this originally came out to understand that one. And just how BIG a thing it was.
