Take a Letter is an early Macintosh-era program for converting text documents into standalone applications. This was particularly useful for creating "Read Me"s and other documentation to accompany software during an era when the end user may not have had a compatible text editor to read it (or worse, none at all). With Take a Letter, a software developer could guarantee that anyone using their software would be able to read the accompanying documentation.

In order to create a "Letter", the user types up their document and saves it as a text file using the text editor of their choice. They then open Take a Letter and follow the prompts in order to create their standalone "Letter".

The "Letter" icon was one of several from that era that made clever use of transparent pixels. When the icon is selected, the transparent pixels invert to black (or gray on color systems), making the envelope appear to open!
