Guides on emulating older applications

Star Trek! themed Flash Player movie, non-interactive, wrapped into a screen saver module for various platforms/versions of the OS. Freeware. It simulates random displays of the "LCARS" computer stations first seen on The Next Generation television series. This author's website hasn't been updated since June 30 2006 but is accumulating Comments to this day, 2863 comments as of writing this, the oldest being December 1 1999. The level of praise is high. v2.21 is the author's highest, while latter day enthusiasts have taken over and made newer wrappers for the saver and some have assigned higher version numbers. The heart of the saver is really just a Flash Movie that can be played by lots of Flash players, and even be passed thru flash-to-screensaver conversion tools.

1st dL is v2.21 (year 2006) meWho's last version for OSX, it was made using "ScreenTime v3" to convert flash into screensaver. This installer is rude and obnoxious, it spends too long time installing its own Flash etc. without getting your confirmation, then begins executing automatically, it lacks any custom install feature to have the saver use your pre-existing Flash player (if any). It must be installed to gain access to the two movie files, not nice. I suggest getting the 3rd download because you can grab its movie files without installing+executing and both movie files (saver & options pane) cooperate when running in any flash player even in OS9. The pair of movies communicate thru a prefs file in the "Preferences/Macromedia/" folder.

2nd dL is v2.01 (year 2000) self contained within a Control Panel the author made using "ScreenTime v1" (aka "CineMac"?) with its Flash player v4.0r7 built in. Runs in Mac OS 7.1 thru 9.2.2 ...and in OSX Classic Environment - if the mouse is kept in the hot corner come timed activation? or just won't start some times? The main movie is very little different from v2.2 except in its inability to restrict animations to one type, and the movie file is NOT accessible - it is entwined within the saver control panel.

3rd dL is v2.3 (year 2010) made by the fan called GodzFire. It contains identical movie files to v2.21 (saver movie is 279,983 bytes and options movie is 5,637 bytes in filesizes) the movies can be extracted without installing and when installing, better luck is reported on higher versions of OSX because v2.3 houses a more modern (and sleeker) version of flash player and it falls back using your existing flash if the new flash can't run. Maybe you can delete its internal player module and still have a working screensaver?

You can get an LCARS key caps (for mechanical keyboards) to go with it at Laughing out loud Massively over-priced though for a set of key caps. Sad
