SwitchRes 2 is truly the Swiss-Army-Knife of display resolution control for Classic Macs!

From the Developer:

SwitchRes 2 is a little utility that will allow you to switch the resolution of all your monitors (before Mac OS X). You can access to all the resolutions of all your displays in a simple, customizable menu. SwitchRes 2 incorporates features from the Monitor Resolution, Monitor Bit-Depth, and Video Mirroring Control Strip Modules bundled with your system. You can use its menu in the Menu Bar, use its provided Control Strip Module, or click on the Finder Desktop with its Contextual Menu Plugin.

SwitchRes 2 has an extensive list of features:

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC

SwitchRes 2 will require a Macintosh with at least MacOS 8. SwitchRes 2.2 or more is compatible with Mac OS 9.
Technically, only the DisplayManager 2.0 and the Appearance Extension are required (included in the System since Mac OS 8).
So, SwitchRes 2 can certainly work with older versions of MacOS, as long as these two components are installed. It was tested with Mac OS 7.5.5 & 7.6, but such configurations are not supported.
