Before there was Mac OS 7, before there was MultiFinder, there was Switcher.

DL #1 contains the following versions of Switcher: 2.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.3, 4.4E, 5.0E.

DL #2 (Switcher.dsk.sit) is a stuffed .dsk image containing a System folder (2.0, I think) and all the versions I was able to scrabble together: 4.0, 4.4, 5.0 and 5.0.1. The file dates are all inauthentic, ugh, except for 5.0.1 which came from the physical disk mentioned below.

DL #3 (Switcher Construction Kit.image.sit) is a DC 4.2 image of the physical Switcher disk I found in my archives (version 5.0.1, from 1986). It is not pure (what are those word setting files doing there?) but it is an unaltered image of the disk exactly as I found it.

DL #4 contains a compilation that includes all of the above versions plus a number of others. The versions included are 2.0, 2.6, 3.5, 4.0, 4.3, 4.4E, 4.4F, 4.9, 5.0E, 5.0b4, 5.01B, 5.0.1, 5.1a13, 5.1

If you notice carefully, the first image gives you the instructions on how to switch between programs and the second image shows you Switcher's window listing the programs you have in your floppy disk or hard drive, from which you can choose which ones Switcher will rotate between. On the top right hand side of the second image, the Switcher icon can be seen on the menubar (it's the two-sided arrow symbol). That's at least 90% of the utility's operation instructions right there.

Would someone knowledgeable be willing to write a bit more detail in the description of what Switcher actually is and how it's used? I get that it's a predecessor to multitasking, but that's about it. Thanks!

I found that the problem with the broken hqx files in the original zip archive was that they were missing the standard header. I added the header where it was missing, tested that all is now OK and re-uploaded the fixed archive (DL #1)

I just encountered the same problem. I tried to expand the hqx files you mention using the Unarchiver in OSX, and none of them worked (usually the Unarchiver can handle everything I throw at it, young or old).

I have at least some old Switcher floppies lying about, will see what I can upload.

ETA: uploaded a new image with a collection of files. It appears that some of those borked .hqx files must have come from MacGUI, because ones that I downloaded from MacGUI just now had the same problem. I did find a couple of good additional files on MacGUI though.

The files Switcher 2.0.hqx, Switcher 3.5.hqx, Switcher 4.3.hqx, Switcher.doc.hqx will not unpack for me using Stuffit 5 or 7. Anyone else able to unpack these?
