This app works with: SheepShaver, Basilisk II, Mini vMac

Almost from its inception in 1987, StuffIt became the standard tool for file compression on the Mac. By combining resource fork handling with compression, Raymond Lau gave Mac users a one-stop solution for archiving their files. Although StuffIt left its shareware roots after version 1.5.1, some form of StuffIt Expander has always been free and freely available.

Available DL's from the top down:

Have split the original download into separate components (as per IIGS_User's request) for easier access to the version you need.

Architecture: 68k PPC

Version 3.x - 4.x runs well within vMac and Mac OS 6 and 7.
Version 5.0 - 5.5.x runs on 68020 or newer CPU, SSW 7.1 or later.
Version 6.0.x runs on PowerPC CPUs only, Mac OS 8.1 or later.
Version 6.5.x requires Mac OS 8.6 or later.
Version 7.0.3 (Classic) requires Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2.2

If you are new to classic Macintosh and require a version of StuffIt to access ".sit" files and you do not have a copy of StuffIt already installed or know how to go about extracting ".sit" archives including the archives on this page, then:

Install the StuffIt Expander v5.5 from here. This is the easiest method to place a version of StuffIt onto your Mac or emulator and can access many of the archives found here. Note: If you are running Mini vMac you will need to use an earlier version of StuffIt (v 4.x or earlier).

Here are all the comments from the old page. Couldn't find a good way to preserve them exactly.

I believe Toast 5 can handle .iso format. I'm not totally sure though.

by Attila - Mon, 04/27/2009 - 12:57
Sorry I should be more specific. I mean the .cdr / .iso format. I'll have to monkey with it when I go home later. I know what works for old macs, I'm just wondering if there's something easier for both old macs and newer pc's/macs. If OS 9 could read that .iso format...

Your upload is OK for your 10.2.8 system, I think. It worked also with my G4/10.4.11.

by Attila - Mon, 04/27/2009 - 12:45
I have OS 10.2.8 on my G3 iMac; is this a format I can make or recognize with that? I barely use OSX, so it's all new to me. I'm all for making things easy for everybody with newer computers, just so long as I can use the old ones, too. Looking at Wikipedia about it now...

Thanks, Attila, a very good collection of old Stuffit applications, arranged to be used in the well-known Macintosh emulators (Mini-vMac, Basilisk and SheepShaver).
About the .cdr format, how to unstuff the files without having Stuffit Expander handy on local hard disk (even on host or emulated system)? That was the reason I've upload it as .cdr before.
If the "multiple versions of a game download" comes up here, I will re-arrange an optional .cdr image again, preformatted to be used in emulators.

by Attila - Mon, 04/27/2009 - 11:34
My thoughts exactly, though I'm not sure about the .cdr extension. I don't use the emulators...I only have old macs! I made it all into a Disk Copy image; hopefully that will work easily enough. Anyway here's StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 with serial, 5.0 with serial and updaters, and DropStuff/Expander 5.5, and they use the serials from 5.0.

Full version would be great, with this download I feel disturbed about the Shareware window that pops up every time I want to DropStuff something.
If you could, please put together full versions of Stuffit Expander/DropStuff 5.5 into one zipped .cdr file (most Stuffit Expander downloads needs to be unstuffed with another Stuffit Expander version first, this game entry prevents that).
Because 5.5 runs on Mac OS 7.1.1 or newer only, we could also need another application entry with full version of 4.0 (if possible) or so which runs in System 6.
In the meanwhile, I found a Stuffit Installer for 4.0 (Expander/DropStuff) and DropStuff 5.5 (which I requested before), but they are all unregistered.
Ironically, I found the english DropStuff 5.5 inside my SheepShaver installation, but it's still unregistered.

I've got a load of StuffIt stuff, including full versions. Probably some not abandonware, though. I'll see what I can upload this week.

by IIGS_User - Sat, 04/25/2009 - 13:10
Anyone have DropStuff 5.5 in english handy? I found a german version somewhere, but no english version, and all download links I found are dead or are linking to SmithMicro, where older versions than 7.0 has been removed.
That needs 5.5, because 6.0 or newer versions of Stuffit are PowerPC only, which will not run in Basilisk.

by IIGS_User - Sun, 04/12/2009 - 05:06
When uploading files stuffed with this version of Dropstuff, sometimes the upload will canceled with the msg "The selected file Your_File_Name.sit could not be uploaded. The file contents (application/octet-stream) do not match its extension (sit).", or will take too long time without any responses.

Edit: Replaced 'xxx7' with 'Mac OS 7' - IIGS User
