The first (Deluxe) version released by Aladdin Systems of the definitively best seller compression software for the Mac...

See Also: StuffIt Classic v1.6 - "Classic" is the shareware "lite" version of StuffIt of the same period and its files are compatible with those of Deluxe version 2.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k

Runs well in Mini vMac II, running System Software 6.0.8 and 7.1

StuffIt Deluxe 2.x cannot open StuffIt archives created by newer versions of StuffIt.
Its files however, are compatible with those of StuffIt Classic 1.6 whose file format it shares
and it can open files made by the earlier StuffIt version 1.x series.
Note: Later versions of StuffIt can open StuffIt Deluxe version 2 archives OK.

One thing to note about StuffIt Deluxe 2.0.x is that "Archives may contain up to a maximum of 1000 entries only." (which would be great if it checked before it started archiving). If you check to create a 1.5.1 archive, it crashes instead of giving you that message. It also crashes StuffIt Classic 1.6 whether you checked to create a 1.5.1 archive or not.

I haven't tested it yet, but I suspect StuffIt 4.0.x doesn't have that limitation. At least 5.5.1 and 7.0.3 don't.

And YW again, Mike. Wink Great work with your modifications. I have now added more versions to the 1.5.1 page...

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2018, August 31 - 8:08am

Thanks again, MacTouch. The 1.5.1 page has been updated and the 3.5.1 page is now merged in with the Deluxe 3x - 7x page.

Yes, the name StuffIt "Classic" was changed to StuffIt "Lite" in later shareware releases.

YW. Smile The serial works with both versions, Standard or Deluxe.

Thanks to Winterlast for uploads. There is still another double-up with version 3.5.1 (just look Winterlast's post). May be it can be merged with the new "Deluxe 3.x to 7.x" page ?
I'm going to upload another version (beta) for the StuffIt Classic 1.6 page. And waiting for your reorganization in the 1.5.1 page before uploading other betas there. Wink

[Edit] Done. In accordance with the "Archive file", StuffIt Classic 1.6 is a derived product from StuffIt version 2. That can explain why the additional files (translators particularly) are compatibles with both versions... Smile

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

...StuffIt soon became very popular and Aladdin Systems was formed to market it (the last shareware release by Lau was version 1.5.1). They split the product line in two, offering StuffIt Classic in shareware and StuffIt Deluxe as a commercial package. Deluxe added a variety of additional functions, including additional compression methods and integration into the Mac Finder to allow files to be compressed from a "Magic Menu" without opening StuffIt itself...

Thanks for the Deluxe 8 page, MacTouch. It looks great. Standard 8 has been my staple on PPC OS X for years. It looks like Deluxe 8 will now be the rule for me Smile

Ah I didn't see Winterlast's post earlier down in thread. He's added it to the archives now. Thank you for this one, Winterlast.

I've remove 1.5.1 from the Deluxe page which is now Deluxe 3.x to 7.x and will add it to the earlier 1.5x page soon.

by MacTouch - 2018, August 29 - 3:19pm

YW. Smile

Yeah, there is multiple copies on the 1.5.1 page. The first is an image ".img", but I can't convert it in ".dmg" format, just using it with emulators like Mini vMac. Most of the other files are almost identicals to the content of the image. I'm agree with you to move the 1.5.1 archive (from the Deluxe page) & besides this is not a "Deluxe" version, I believe it will be more relevant to not have versions that have their own pages elsewhere & missing in the main "Deluxe" page. But you are the only one to decide... Wink

The version 3 of Winterlast is the 3.0.7 as there is also an existing version 3.0.1 (from your page). In the meantime, we can proceed with the 3.0.7 or let this version instead of 3.0.1, may be ?

[Edit] The StuffIt Deluxe 8 page is now created. Smile

Hi MacTouch. I don't know what/where is the one by Winterlast but I think that 1.5.x version on the "StuffIt Deluxe 1.5.x - 7.x" page should be moved to the 1.5.1 page (1.5 is not "Deluxe").
- Although I don't understand why there are so many copies of 1.5.1 on the 1.5.1 page, as nothing written in the page describes differences, if any. I see file size differences but are they all needed?

Good to hear you've made some progress with your Deluxe 8.x copy tho'. And it's good to see the French Classic 1.6 added to the Classic page. Thanks Smile

Thanks for your version, Winterlast. Smile I wonder, Mike, if the version of Winterlast could be replacing the version 1.5.x on the page "StuffIt 1.5.x - 7.x" and renamed "3.x - 7.x" or if a freshly page would be better ? The version 1.5.1 archived here could be transferred to the page StuffIt 1.5.1 as versions on it are preinstalled...

[Edit] Just added the French version. Some items on the preferences window have not been translated & the help too. Cheers. Smile

[Edit2] Good news for "Deluxe 8". Seems the installer has a known problem, like some apps... The wrapper doesn't look like it must be. So I have replaced it by the one on your Classic version just uploaded & it works perfectly. Smile Will create a page certainly tomorrow & upload the original & modified versions together. Wink

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2018, August 28 - 1:44am

the installer for the version 8 doesn't work. Sad

I do have StuffIt Standard version 8.0.2, which I had been meaning to add to the archives for ages.
- So the incentive to do so has arrived - StuffIt Standard v8.x Smile

Time and patience for Deluxe 8 will likely pay off and it will be nice to see the French Classic 1.6 get added to the 1.6 page. Cheers.

I believe we can find what we are looking for if we have time & patience.

*holds up a pair of StuffIt Deluxe 3.0.7 install disks*

Where should I put them? With version 3.5.1, versions 1.5.x - 7.x, elsewhere?

MacTouch's picture
by MacTouch - 2018, August 27 - 6:43pm

Yes, Mike, but I believe we can find what we are looking for if we have time & patience. Smile And if we give it the effort it requires. I'm on the search of the version 3, so if I find it, I will upload it instantly. Wink
Meanwhile, I will upload a version 1.5b1 (probably a beta) & a French Classic 1.6 on their respective pages. Unfortunately, the installer for the version 8 doesn't work. Sad So, we need to find it elsewhere later.

Hi MacTouch. If you had not started this page, we would not have any of this version at all. So I thank you for that, as this is one very rare piece of software and to have it complete is not short of being incredible.

Now to find Deluxe v.3.0.x - (or at least, install disk 2) Wink

MacTouch's picture
by MacTouch - 2018, August 26 - 6:52pm

I have to thanks mrdav & you MTT for working on this page to improve it quickly... Smile And, also congrats for finding an installer for this version. I'm not always right... Wink

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2018, August 22 - 11:51pm

Thanks, mrdav. That's probably what occurred. It was curious to see, mainly as it shows up in SSW 6 but not 7. The replaced file is up in the page now.

mrdav's picture
by mrdav - 2018, August 22 - 12:10pm

Please go ahead, MTT.

BTW I think I know what might have happened. When imaging floppy disk 1, I inadvertently put the disk in unlocked, but ejected quickly before DC 4.2 could work on it, then locked the disk and proceeded. Obviously the Finder was quicker than I was and managed to do a write to the disk first.

MikeTomTom's picture
by MikeTomTom - 2018, August 22 - 9:50am

I could redo everything

Only Disk 1 needs re-doing, mrdav. Install disk 2 is 100% correct.

I've also DL'd the archive from the link you gave then made the conversion to DC 4.2 and the install disk 1 that I converted is correct date and time-wise on both platforms. So if it's OK by you I can repackage and replace. This would save double checking - as I have SSW 6 set up here.

mrdav's picture
by mrdav - 2018, August 22 - 8:38am

->one oddity<-

I don't understand why this happened. All conversion was done on a System 7 Mac and I used Disk Copy 6 to make the floppy and Disc Copy 4.2 to image the floppy.

EDIT: I just looked at Disk 1 with Disktop and it has only two files both dated 1991. So it looks alright from my side. I cannot easily look at the Desktop file in System 6 at present. So I will have to leave it to you to resolve. If you like I could redo everything and double-check that everything is locked throughout, apart from the floppy during its creation.

Mrdav! Thank You! I had almost resigned this one into the "too hard basket" Wink

Excellent. I can remove my mock-up DL above, now. - Done.

[Edit] one oddity. It appears that disk 1 was written to, this morning - but it shows up only in System 6, not in 7, so I'm assuming that the System 6 desktop file in the floppy image was written to, but only during the conversion, or checking before packaging.

mrdav's picture
by mrdav - 2018, August 22 - 1:56am

Found them! They were on the Classic Mac Survival Kit in two img files (not labelled as version 2). I made floppy disks from them and then made DC 4.2 images of the floppies to upload here. Date stamps look good so there is a good chance that they are in pristine condition.

Thanks for looking, mrdav, and for the updater and documentation (reveals what's missing).

MacTouch, you are correct of course, the Mac Gui file is for version 3.x and not 2x. Still, it would be great to find the other install disk for version 3, even if it's only half as rare Wink

A full install of either would be ideal but I think version 2 is so rare that it would be amazing if it does come to us here.

Hi there,

This has the file Stuffit Deluxe Disk 1.image which extracts to a Disk Copy 4.2 image of the full install disk for StuffIt Deluxe version 2.x

Well, I've looked into this image & this is not the version 2. Sad However, this is version 3.0.2 of StuffIt Deluxe. As we have not this one, perhaps this will be interesting to found the complete set for uploading... Wink

mrdav's picture
by mrdav - 2018, August 21 - 11:46am

I looked through my rather large catalogue of old stuff and could not find any disk images of this (let alone disk 2). However, I did find an updater and some documentation that I have uploaded.

Livid! - I stumbled across the Stuffit Deluxe v2 installer image at Mac Gui.

This has the file Stuffit Deluxe Disk 1.image which extracts to a Disk Copy 4.2 image of the full install disk for StuffIt Deluxe version 2.x

In virgin unmodified condition!

Problem. This is disk 1 of a 2 disk install set - and they don't have disk image 2 !!

Well if they do, I couldn't find it Sad

MacTouch's picture

Yep. Wink

I don't know if these versions come in installers. But, I will upload French versions for 1.51 & the 1.6 Classic probably soon. I will add also some translators that are not provided with the 1.6 installer. May be the page with a lot of versions should be modified too, starting with the version 3 till 7, as there is a redundant version 1.51... A page for this one already exists, but the contents are not exactly the same, so it could be interesting to compare them...

Great. Thanks, MacTouch. I was hoping to see this one surface - it's little sibling is here.

It's easy to reactivate Deluxe 2.x's personalization dialog, by deleting it's data fork (drag it onto BBEdit Lite, select all, delete and save). But I hit a brick wall trying to locate a version 2.x serial.

A pity the help file and likely some extra plug-ins are missing to make this complete.

Perhaps one day the full install for this will show up. But until then... Thanks again.

[Edit]   A 09000   works.
