SpeedyCD is a Control Panel that automatically places a copy of the CD-ROM's Desktop file on your hard disk when you insert the CD-ROM into its drive. When the Mac needs to get a file from the CD-ROM, SpeedyCD diverts the Mac to the CD-ROM Desktop file on the hard disk. Because accessing the hard disk is very much faster than accessing the CD-ROM, the Mac can find the location in the index more quickly. After the file is located, SpeedyCD returns access back to the CD-ROM. From then on, you're back to CD-ROM speed. (The Washington Post Feb 24, 1992)
