SoundJam MP was an MP3 player, which Apple acquired and turned into the first version of iTunes.
Its main competitor at the time was Panic's Audion.

SoundJam features fast conversion from CD, AIFF, QuickTime, and WAV formats to MP3, and allows you to play MP3 streams over the internet. You can quickly and easily create customizable playlists, and organize your music by artist, track, song, and music style. It features a 10-Band Graphic Equalizer that allows you to control the quality and tone of your music manually or by using preset music styles: Jazz, Rock, Classical and more.

Included is a selection of skins to change the look and plug-ins for cool visual effects, and if you want to use skins from Audion or Winamp Classic, the "Skin Conversion Tool" will help you in this task. Skins are also available as separate downloads.

G-Force visualizers, for SoundJam, are located here: G-Force (for Classic)

SoundJam MP is Internet-friendly! As mentioned, MP3 streaming audio play is supported.

Features:

Play music streams over the Internet
Play MP2, MP3, AIFF, Q-Design AIFF,
QuickTime, WAV, Sound Designer, MOD and 'snd' music files.
Manage your playlists
Use CDDB lookup
Use CDDB submission
ID3 Tag support
AppleScript support
30 Encodings and more!

Compatibility
Architecture: PPC PPC (Carbonized)

System Requirements: SSW 7.6.1/Mac OS 8.1 or later, Power Macintosh with a 603 processor at 100 MHz or faster

The Carbonized SoundJam MP v2.5.2 requires Mac OS X.

Note: The Mac OS X only, SoundJam MP v2.5.2 (DL #4) is a pre-release version that never went gold. Casady & Greene had sold the rights to Apple to use the code for their iTunes development before SoundJam MP for OS X could be marketed and released to the public.

This pre-release version is time-bombed and it expired back in May, 2020.

Our Garden member, powermax, was able to patch the Mac OS X pre-release and has added it to this page (DL #7).

This patched copy works fantastically. So if you are wanting to run the Mac OS X native version of SoundJam MP, you need to grab DL's #4 and #7 and you'll be good to go.

@fogWraith: You're a very busy man, I know. But if you ever have a spare moment or two. I'd like see this one eventuate.

I have a copy of the software and last version of the database laying around, so if there's any interest in such a service, I can probably set it up.

gnudb.org also hosts this service, afaik.

Sadly, it appears FreeDB was shut down by its corporate owners in March 2020. This very clever redirect no longer works. If anyone comes up with a similarly clever new workaround for getting CD information, please share.

I just patched the OS X version to remove the expiration. The 7th DL contains only the patched application. To use it, expand the ZIP archive into the same directory where the original SoundJam application is located, then double-click on the "SoundJam noexpire" application. Enjoy!

So, found out my script doesn’t work on OS X 10.4 Tiger, Cause systemsetup command is not present in 10.4.
Have to use date to change time 3 years back , and ntpdate to set back time to current. Caveat is that both needs root to run, so the Tiger version of the script below, will ask twice for root password to change date, and to set back date, in the opening Terminal window.

#!/bin/bash
# set date 3 years back
sudo date 0515100017
# wait 10 seconds
sleep 10
# open SoundJam
open /Applications/"Apps Son-Video"/soundJam/SoundJam &
# wait 5 seconds
sleep 5
# Set time back to current with ntpdate
sudo ntpdate -u time.euro.apple.com
# wait 5 seconds
sleep
# kill Terminal
osascript -e "tell application \"System Events\" to keystroke \"q\" using command down"

If anyone think of better solution than my time tricks to make Soundjam run again on OS X, would love to know.

Ok found a way:
open a text editor to make a bash script with this :

#!/bin/bash
# turn off ntpd
systemsetup -setusingnetworktime off
# set date 3 years back
systemsetup -setdate '05:15:2017'
# wait 10 seconds
sleep 10
# open SoundJam
open /Applications/"Apps Audio-Video"/soundJam/SoundJam &
# wait 5 seconds
sleep 5
# turn back on ntpd
systemsetup -setusingnetworktime on
# kill Terminal
osascript -e "tell application \"System Events\" to keystroke \"q\" using command down"

Save it as "runSoundJam.command" (or another name you like, but keep .command at the end),
and make it executable by :

chmod +x runSoundJam.command

Double click on "runSoundJam.command",
that will open Terminal, turn off the network time setting, set system time back 3 years, wait for 10 seconds, open SoundJam, wait for 5 seconds, turn back on network time setting, and finally quit Terminal app.
Obviously you'll have to edit the path to your SoundJam install in the script, and maybe change the "back in time" setting to fit with the time you first installed Soundjam.

@MikeTomTom, Yes thanks for these links. Seems another OSX version would be very difficult, if not impossible to find.
So sad, I used it on my Leo and SnoLeopard machines… Love it cause it can use tons of nice converted WinAmp skins.

I tried setting the system time back. It launch if you set it back two month ago .
I've installed it on that machine in may 2017, so seems to be a 3 years time limit... bad joke.
Anyway, it stays open and works if you set system time back to current, after opening it with system time set back to 05/2020.
Tried to look if there is a way to change the registration, but no joy.
Wish there would be a way to reset that.

As of today, launching SoundJamMP v2.5.2 on OSX doesn't work ...
Any idea were to get another working version ?

Oh... well that's new Sad

The 3rd DL above, v2.5.3 still works OK - in Classic mode on OS X...

But I don't know of another native OS X version off-hand. Casady & Greene lost SoundJam to Apple before the 2.5.2 Carbon trial went gold. Last known DL page for the Carbon trial and the announcement made shortly afterwards (Wayback Machine links).

Audion works nicely for me on PPC OS X and also Rosetta, MP3 playback/convert/record & radio (stream/record) works well

Earlier iTunes too, perhaps ? (I don't use iTunes).

BTW: The last known DL page for the 2.5.2 trial is not useful for obtaining the trial app, as it requests an email address, which claims it will send you a link for the actual download. This of course will be broken.

I tried tossing the preferences, but no joy... :/ Any idea were to get another working version ?
Pity I used to listen to radio with it. Even had done it a custom hires icon.

Do any of these versions communicate with the Rio 500 MP3 player?

I'm not familiar with Rio players but the install in the download for version 2.5.3 installs both Rio and Nomad USB drivers. So I assume that would be yes.

Do any of these versions communicate with the Rio 500 MP3 player? I do remember reading Mac users were able to use SoundJam to sync with that device.

I loved this software in college (at least before Apple appropriated it into iTunes) ((That's a Tron reference.))

Anyway, for those of you who would like to use SoundJam MP with CDDB database lookup, here's what you do:

The original CDDB servers hard-coded into SoundJam and the AppleCD Player programs are no longer accessible. You will need to redirect the cddb.cddb.com host to the FreeDB host (given as an IP address Host below).

(1) Get TCP/IP working and active in the TCP/IP contol panel.
(2) If your Macintosh doesn't have a Hosts file in the System Folder or Preferences folder, open SimpleText and create it. If you DO have a Hosts file in either of these locations, open the file in SimpleText and add this line to the bottom:

cddb.cddb.com A 195.214.216.38

You can use tab or spaces to separate the three fields. Save the file.
(3) Open the TCP/IP control panel, pull down Edit, then select User Mode. Select Advanced and OK.
(4) Click the Select Hosts File button and choose your Hosts file.
(5) Restart.
(6) In SoundJam MP: Pull down Edit menu, select Preferences. Select CD Lookup.
(7) Enter the FreeDB submit email: freedb-submit@freedb.org
(This will prevent SoundJam from protesting that the email is invalid.)
You should be good to go now.

This particular WhiteCap v3.2 is for SoundJam only, not even a standalone included with it.

This is fantastic software. I had a scratched CD and was so glad someone posted an image. I now have a fully functional MP3-playing TAM again! For what it is worth, this is the only MP3 player I have found that can reliably open all MP3s I throw at it (even 256-kbps) under System 7.6.1

This has been up on the Garden for quite awhile, I only edited it today because I was thinking about Casady & Greene applications and wondered why this one didn't show up. Don't just wait for stuff to show up on the "recent changes," go take a look around the site alphabetically or click on publishers' or authors' names to see what else turns up. A lot of things posted here are neglected.

Perfect, thanks! I had just the Free version on my iMac G3 but couldn't track down my old copy of the full app. I used this for years! The strongest memory is listening to the mp3 export of my new songs after they were completed... was the first thing I remembered upon seeing the SoundJam MP interface . Smile
