This app works with: Mini vMac

With the synesthetic promise that it "paints your music with pictures," SongPainter aimed to be the music composition software for the rest of us:

If you already know how to use your Macintosh with MacPaint or MacWrite, you'll be writing music with SongPainter in no time. You don't need to be able to read music to use SongPainter. [...] The best way to learn to use it is to experiment with the menus and window options.
- The user manual

In practice, SongPainter removes the one immediately intuitive aspect of traditional notation—that higher positions on the staff represent higher notes—and replaces it with a semi-arbitrary palette of stripes, grids, and polka dots. Even if you do master this oddball system, there's no way to translate your work into something a non-SongPainter-initiated musician can understand. (Macworld: "A printout of your composition would be about as useful as a novel written in Egyptian hieroglyphics.")

Important: To hear playback correctly in Mini vMac, you will need to set the emulator's speed to 1x. While holding the Control key, type the letters S Z.
