Emulation
Guides on emulating older applications

Smile is a script editor for AppleScript and much more.

Smile is simpler and more user-friendly than Apple's Script Editor, which makes Smile the editor of choice for beginners. Smile implements all the basic features that improve the scripter's experience: "Find definition", in-line script execution, powerful "Find/Replace", "Recent" menu, fast "Open Dictionary", customizable "Scripts" menu and more.

Smile is also a fully object-oriented graphical user interface builder for Mac OS 9.
Since Smile implements the full Appearance interface into AppleScript, you can design rapidly the whole interface required to control virtually any automation task.

Installation:
At the first level of the archive folder, there is a folder named "-> System Folder". Open it. It contains a folder named "Smile help", and two scripting additions named "Satimage" and "AppleScript Formatting".
- Drop the icons of the two scripting additions on the icon of your System folder.

- Open your System folder.
- Move the "Smile help" folder to the "Help" folder of your System folder. If there is no "Help" folder in your System folder (OS before 8.5), simply move the "Smile help" folder into the folder of Smile (the application itself).
- Move the "Smile ƒ" folder wherever suitable.

Compatibility
Architecture: PPC

System Software 7.6.1 and later (for Smile 1.7.2 & 1.8.x).

Note : because of a bug of Help Viewer, you may get a "Memory full" error message when you attempt to launch a Search in Smile Help. Other problems can occur. If this is the case, quit Help Viewer, remove "Help View Accessors" from the "Apple Help Prefs" folder in the Preferences folder of the System folder (or, trash the "Apple Help Prefs" folder), then launch again Smile Help.

I'd upload all final versions for each major revision of the OS. Also be sure to upload the companion and scientific components.

Smile seams to be discontinued now. I tried emailing them for support only to have it bounce back with a "address now available" error. We should consider uploading all major versions of this software. For reference this wayback page can be used as a changelog; unfortunately it did't save the download files so it can't be much help there.
