Guides on emulating older applications

"Ren'Py is a free and cross platform engine for digital storytelling. It makes it easy to combine words, images, and sounds to create visual novels and life simulation games.

Visual novels are computer-based stories that are told through words, images, sounds, and music. Many visual novels also present the player with menu choices that allow the player to control how the story is told.

Ren'Py's script language makes it easy to write visual novels, and other writing-heavy games. It's easy to learn, and scales well to the largest projects. Even without customization, Ren'Py provides the features players have come to expect from their visual novels.

Life Simulation games, such as management and dating sims, are more interactive games that mix story with gameplay. Ren'Py's screen language allows one to create complex interfaces, while its support for the Python scripting language allows for complex game logic, if that's what your project requires." -from the "Why Ren'Py" page,

The lastest version to run on Mac OS X 10.3: Ren'Py 6.3.1, July 15, 2007.
The lastest version for PPC: Ren'Py 6.14.1, August 26, 2012.

Thanks for turning me on to Ren'Py! I'm still doing a lot of testing. Let's move to the mg Ren'Py forum topic for the time being.

Thanks for the detailed technical issues! It might come in handy. Maybe you should make some kind of a readme to add the main Ren'Py page?

Compatibility issues. There's a ton of programmes built for Ren'Py v6.3.2 in which the v6.3.0-6.3.1 will NOT launch them (perhaps if the version check were disabled but...) and v6.12.n launches them BUT when played they crash at some places. "Builders' Mind" quits at the start of scene 4. "Heart of Fire" quits if you try to save state. I have six more v6.3.2 games yet untested, so like I say there is this big hole in compatibility.

What works good (in Tiger, PPC, no internet...) is using v6.10.1 to play all the oldest Ren'Py games and then using v6.12.2 to play the newer games like Groozle that can't be launched otherwise. The incompatibility is in Python itself, Ren'Py 6.10.n uses Python v2.5 and Ren'Py 6.11.0 begins using Python v2.6

Ren'Py Launcher v6.3 isn't a Universal Binary and Launcher v6.10.1 is, so there's another positive. I'll update me Groozle page soon.

EDIT: v6.12.2 is now the necessary player app highest for Tiger PPC offline, not v6.12.0 - because both the 6.12.1 and 6.12.2 ren'py packages contain player apps which declare themselves 6.12.0 - I guessed wrong the developer tools were updated while the player didn't change - player did change, and thanks to this blunder within ren'py there were a few ren'py games created in which their authors state v6.12.0 is needed but what's really needed is 6.12.1 or 6.12.2 - glad I haven't claimed to have finalized my playback method yet... Coming soon...

I got the hang of this now. It's wasteful to embed the "launcher" in each programme title, wasteful to the tune of 10-20 MB per title. Just as if you embed the standalone Flash Player in every flash game you kept. Better off having one or two key Player (launcher) versions like this page has already. Launcher v6.14.1 for Tiger and Leopard (Universal both cases) and then Launcher v6.3 for playing in OS X 10.3 Panther.

I tried and couldn't get 6.3 to do anything useful in Panther. I'm sticking with Tiger for Ren'Py. I also didn't get 6.14 to work, does it require an internet connection? Anyway, there's this:

I'm making another small game page that's gonna be used as an example how to separate and combine ren'py programmes and ren'py launchers. It is using Launcher v6.12.0 and works as low as Tiger and the game name is The Groozle.

I made the system requirements by trial and error a while ago. The latest PPC version is 100% Tiger compatible. The most famous Ren'Py game and probably the only professional like production is Katawa Shõjo (a free game though; I don't know if there's a PPC compiled version of it.). I think the only version of Ren'Py worth uploading to the Garden are each last version to work on each big OS X release (the latest for 10.6 or 7, the latest for 10.9, ect... or something like this.).

Found over 400 versions of Ren'Py on GitHub all without system requirements. Over 1000 games or programmes in English alone. RE:A merely was the first I encountered and the first uploaded to mg, a good example nonetheless - there's lots of questionable content out there. Ren'Py may be similar to Flash however japanese anime style.

RE:Alistair I guess deserves its own page. I put it here as shortcut to satisfy the sample request and the character screenshot was already here from the o.p. image looks similar to Merui but technically isn't. I don't know enough about this.

Edit: turns out there already is a sample game that comes supplied with all versions, game "The Question" and that is what the character screenshot is from. I will make a page for RE:A.

So it is a stand-alone game, not a demo for the framework? Then why not give it its own page and instead link to here? (".. created using Ren'Py")

Another question - the builds for OSX are PowerPC only? What about the later version? UB? Is it known up to what OS X version they will work?

6.3.1 is said to be the highest for Panther, so that means the highest for Tiger is much greater. 6.10.1 is handled by Tiger as seen in the sample game dL5 but the project apps aren't here yet. We need to obtain the actual highest Tiger version, in between the 6.10.1 thru 6.14.0 range.

Anyone try playing RE:Alistair? It begins you with a startling deception, then quickly seems uninteresting, followed by gradually increasing worthiness.

Thanks for uploading, this looks interesting! The 6.14.1 doesn't run on 10.4.11 (".. not supported on your system"), so I assume it wants Leopard. The 6.3.1 works fine, so if you're on Tiger, pick that one instead.

I found this app-game (dL5) standalone was made using Ren'Py. It is one of them visual novels/life simulations aforementioned, about a school girl named Merui and its title is an e-mail subject line "RE(garding, a boy named): Alistair". In it you mostly read and click the next, with an occasional Choose Your Own Adventure menu dotting the landscape.

Could you eventually share a bit of your work?
I think the app would attract a lot more attention, when some samples were available.

Surprised to see it here. I'm a long time Ren'Py user. It's also useful for creating adventure games and presentations.
