Guides on emulating older applications

This is a great little "set it and forget utility" for Mac OS 7.

Connectix Corporation was a software and hardware company, noted for having released innovative products that were either made obsolete as Apple Computer incorporated the ideas into system software, or were sold to other companies once they become popular. It was formed in October 1988 by Jon Garber; dominant board members were Garber, Bonnie Fought (the two were later married), and close friend Roy McDonald. McDonald was still Chief Executive Officer and president when Connectix finally closed in August 2003.

RAM Doubler, the first product to combine compression with virtual memory, a top selling Mac utility for many years (eventually made obsolete as Apple improved their own virtual memory); [There was also a RAM Doubler for Windows 3.1 which increased system resources - using a compression technique - therefore allowing more applications to run] [Wikipedia]

RAM Doubler is not a solution for applications that require more memory than you have installed (in physical RAM).

mrdav: A patch for version 1.6.1 that prevents the request for the master disk is given here. I have uploaded the patched version (unpack the Disk Copy 4.2 image with MacZip).

The third download is version 1.6.2

Final download is RAMDoublerPump - "Patch RAM Doubler versions 1.0.4, 1.5.1 and 1.5.2 to allow up to 16x RAM "doubling"". A newer version can also be found here. On the DL page, you need to select the entire block of characters below and including "(This file must be converted with BinHex 4.0)" down to and including the ending colon ":" in the page. Copy this and paste it into a plain text editor, such as BBEdit. Save the text as "Pump161.hqx". Locate the file you just saved and drag it over onto Stuffit Expander. You should end up with a file "Pump161.sit" and the expanded folder "Pump161 Folder" containing the patch, if all goes well. Also a similar product is available in the form of MaxRAM, which is still (surprisingly) being sold.

Yes, I have 32-bit memory addressing turned on. Haven't tried 24-bit at all, but that wouldn't matter now would it, or???

@MacBeth: Do you have 32 bit memory enabled in the "Memory" Control Panel? Don't know if that would effect starting RD but I believe it works best if it is set to 32 bit.

Too bad, but I had no luck in making RAM Doubler v2 (or 2.0.2) work on my darn flimsy LC II. It still freezes on start-up (right on the welcome screen where "Connectix RAM doubler installed" should have popped up). I really wonder why. Any ideas? Anyone? Might there be known incompatibilities with other popular extensions or control panels?

Great stuff, and that was really quick too Smile
I'll try this version, and tell you if it worked or not.

Sure thing. I've added a link with a DiskCopy 4.2 image of 2.0 and the 2.0.2 updater.

You can't install from a mounted floppy image as it will ask for the "master disk". Instead, either write the image to a floppy disk, or just copy the installer to the hard disk.

@Protocol 7
Would you care to upload RAM Doubler v2 and the 2.0.2 updater, as you mentioned you could. I have a sluggish LC II that won't accept v1.x.x (freezes on start-up). Maybe someone has experienced similar problems? Anyway, thanks.

Here's the 1.6.2A Update. From the readme:

Updater 1.6.2A solves a problem where Updater 1.6.2 would result in a Type 11 error when updating the RAM Doubler 1.6.1 disk with RAM Doubler not currently installed. There is no difference between the versions of RAM Doubler installed, and if you installed 1.6.2 successfully, you don't need 1.6.2A.

I can also up 2.0 and the 2.0.2 update if there's any interest.

I've got RAM Doubler 1.6.2 and 1.6.2A updaters on old MacWorld cover CDs I've also found patches for RAM Doubler 2.

the last, final update to 1.6.1 which would be RAM Doubler 1.6.2...

I "might" have a copy of the 1.6.2 updater stored... Will check later.

It's unbelievable that it's still shareware, but it is... "Copyright © 1995-2009 Spencer Low. " Anyway, we don't have 1.6.0 here, but thanks for checking!

FYI I did an exhaustive search (about an hour) and couldn't find the last, final update to 1.6.1 which would be RAM Doubler 1.6.2. Amazingly, there's still an FTP for RAM Charger and I got an update for that recently, but unfortunately Connectix is truly defunct and I can't find the last update anywhere.

The good news is that I've been using v1.6.1 trouble-free for over a month now on OS 7.6.1 Smile

That patch sounds very interesting to check out...

I did a quick search to try and refresh my dimming brain cells (it can make RAM Doubler allocate 6x the RAM not the 16x I somehow thought it went up to). The patch is called MaxRAM and even tho' the home page for it hasn't been updated in eons. Its still being sold as a $5 shareware - so its not eligible to be added here.

It also patches version 1.6 only not 1.6.1 or newer Sad

According to the MaxRAM FAQ:

Does MaxRAM 1.6 work with RAM Doubler 1.6.1 or 1.6.2?
MaxRAM 1.6 works only exclusively with plain RAM Doubler 1.6 (not RAM Doubler 1.6.1 or 1.6.2).
Is there going to be a new version of MaxRAM compatible with RAM Doubler 1.6.1 or 1.6.2?
MaxRAM 1.6 was the final and last version of MaxRAM. There will be no more future versions of MaxRAM.

That patch sounds very interesting to check out. If you find it somewhere, please add it to this page. Thanks Mike Garden.

I recall using a patch for version 1.6.x that would change the RAM allocation from 2x to 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, etc (up to 16x IIRC)... How effective I don't know, but the later releases from Connectix, RD 2.x and newer officially supported a 3x allocation.

An untested S/N is included, but I don't think it's even necessary for this software.
