QuarkXPress was the standard in DTP, used largely by professionals in the industry, before it was overtaken in popularity by InDesign. This page is for version 3.1 from the early 1990's.

Note about 4th DL: These are "rescue disk images". Rebuilt from very poor copies found on the MacGUI web site, which were mislabeled under a guise of being an installer set of the full 3.11 version of QuarkXpress. Unfortunately they are an updater set. It will want an earlier version of QuarkXpress to install over. It requires a pre-installed International English copy of 3.0 or 3.1 to install to (which we don't have).
— DL's #4 & #6 are archived here in the hope that one day we will obtain versions of QXP 3.1 they can be used with.

Architecture: 68k

The US English pre-installed copy of QXP 3.1 (DL #2) runs well in the Mac II variant of Mini vMac - screenshots 3 & 4 taken on Mini vMac (Mac II running SSW 6.0.7). It also runs on mono-Mac's (tested on Mac SE). The updater to this (DL #5), also works well at updating the US copy up to version 3.11

Compact Mac displays like those found on the Plus, SE, etc, leave little room for editing page layout. QXP 3.1 is better suited to full color displays of 800x600 or greater.

Thanks, mrdav. I'll grab a copy now.

[Edit] it looks good, I'll package them up as a complete item and upload to the page shortly.

Thanks for the leads. They helped out perfectly.

"Prepare for Service Bureau" is on the Mac mania disk, located in the XPress XTensions folder.

Only one to go Wink

"Multiple Master Utilities" and "Prepare for Service Bureau" are the two filter sets missing from the QuarkFreebies 3.1 addition to the U.S. 3.11 updater. If we come across those two we'd be able to reconstruct the QuarkFreebies as being complete.

Which two filters are missing?

Thanks for the leads, mrdav. What I have is more complete than what's on the Info-Mac disk, so likely I'll use what I have. The Macintosh Mania disc I found to be the more useful, in that it has four of the Filters that I don't, so with a combination of my 5 and it's 4, we'll only be "two short of a full pack" Wink

Re: your comments on the M Mania page, I agree, the two top DL's are the same. I think the DL #1 .toast should be removed, keeping the 2nd DL .cdr, as the .toast was Finder modified in 2012 whereas the 2nd DL .cdr is an unmodified, pristine copy. I guess what's really missing from that page is "Macintosh Mania 1" , that is, I assume there was one produced.

Mike, there is another updater called Quark 3.11 UD in the Applications folder on Info-Mac May 1993 CD. It seems to have the Frame Editor and Tags updaters included. Feel free to delete the 3.11 updater I uploaded if it proves to be unnecessary.

There is also Quark Xpress Freebies 3.1 in Macintosh Mania (ist DL but also on DL #2). Look in DeskTopPublishing/Xpress Xtensions. However, I don't see 11 Xtensions in the folder.

Thanks for the US updater, mrdav. It works easily (very untypical for Quark) in updating the US 3.1 copy we have here to 3.11.

It may have been a BBS download at one stage? Or perhaps sent out to registered users. And although it does update the main program and that works, it is also incomplete.

Missing from this update, are replacements of the Frame Editor, and the XPress Tags and WordPerfect Filters. Plus and item called "QuarkFreebies 3.1", which is a set of 11 Xtensions from Quark that do a number of cool tasks (outlined in the "3.11 Read Me" doc that's included).

Interestingly, I have the updated 3.11 Frame Editor and filters and 5 out of the 11 QuarkFreebies + another 5 from Quark that run in QXP 3.11 - If you don't come across the "QuarkFreebies 3.1" set in your travels, I'll likely upload what I have to the page.

Hi mrdav. Re: the MacGUI disks; Thanks. - It would be great to have an unmodified disk set here, but unfortunately these are not.

The person who archived them had mounted each disk in turn, copied the mounted disks to a HD (so they became folders) then archived each folder separately with Disk Copy 6 (compressed format). - When you mount the DC image, it mounts as a disk containing a folder named Program Disk 1, etc, etc...

Disk 1 contains what looks like a QuarkXpress 3.1.1 updater. So perhaps that's what it is, an updater set to 3.1 only?

I'll look into salvaging what's there.

[Edit] I've reconstructed these successfully and have good checksums and date & time stamps. But it is a 3.1.1 update disk set. Worse, it will not update the US version we have, above. It gives the error message: "The selected file is not an updatable version of QuarkXPress". I wish it would say what it wants to update over... I've uploaded it to this page tho' as something useable might turn up one day.

There are disk images of v. 3.11 (4 program disks + tutorial disk) in Mac Gui ( and search for quarkexpress)
