Though difficult to use, Open Music System (OMS) was one of the only software options for connecting and configuring MIDI devices to a pre-OS X Macintosh. Searches for MIDI devices connected to either the Printer or Modem Serial Port. Difficult to get working using USB and requires relevant device drivers to use at all.

Luckily, the installer provides drivers for dozens of popular devices dating back to before the time of this software's release, and the manual provided gives instructions to define additional MIDI devices. Several members of Opcode's own Studio line of MIDI controllers are known to work best with this software; the Studio devices can be found very easily and inexpensively in the second hand market.

QuickTime 2.5 and later allow you to play back MIDI music directly through OMS. Check the manual for more info.

This became Apple's recommended MIDI interface from around the time of the PowerPC transition up until Apple provided their own solution, Audio MIDI Setup for Mac OS X. For versions of Mac OS earlier than 7.5, you can use Apple MIDI Manager 2.02.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC

Requires OMS compatible software and System 7.5 or later.

Installer comes with 68k code only, but the resulting "OMS Setup" application contains both 68k + PowerPC code.
