Uploader’s Note

This is a disk image of a companion CD that came with a Japanese book. At the time, I was a Shareware developer for the Macintosh and it was customary that my programs were included in such compilations. Very often, the publisher would send me a copy of the published book, as was the case here.

Since I do not read Japanese, I cannot say anything else about this collection, although I can confirm that the disc contains several of my programs.

Smile! Macintosh

Joke software is Mac culture!

A collection of cheerful software for you and your Mac

An unexpected delight

There are many reasons Mac users purchase Mac computers, such as “The design is good”, or “The user interface (desktop) is cute”. We think they are attracted to its appearance and design sense. Certainly, from the moment a Mac starts up with a broad smile, until a problem occurs with a bomb icon, there is an overabundance of humor. Compared to Windows, there’s more “joke software” on the Mac, and one of the reason’s it is part of Mac culture may be because of the Mac’s humorous nature.

For example, the Mac has unique features. In truth, these features aren’t related to the system, and they could be removed, but are still present. One famous example is in the first entry of the Apple Menu, “About This Computer”. If you click it while holding the [option] key, it becomes “About The Finder…”. If you open it, an image of a mountain appears, and if you wait, the credits for previous versions of the Finder will appear. Now try clicking the same “About The Finder…” menu entry while holding both the [option] and [command] keys at the same time. This time, the mouse cursor becomes a unique character.

Just one more somewhat big example: try typing “secret about box” in a text tool like SimpleText, then selecting the sentence (inverting it) and dragging it to the desktop with the mouse. Soon, an iguana-like flag appears over a landscape of Apple’s US headquarters. If you hold down the [P] key while dragging, the flag becomes a Mac OS flag.

The software included in this book maintains this sense of humor, with the goal of bringing people a smile from the start. If you’ve been serious in the use of your Mac until now, you’ll be attracted to the authors’ sense of humor. This book was written following the release of MSD-Japan’s CD-ROMs “Smile! Macintosh ①” and “Smile! Macintosh ② (nin)”, with the goal of introducing this kind of “joke software” to more people. We hope this book will make Mac users’ Mac life more fun.

Finally, we’d like to thank all of the authors of the software for their cooperation.

Thank you very much

I think this is very helpful. I definitely appreciate it. The size shouldn't be a problem, because it's all useful, straightforward information.

I transcribed and attempted to translate the text from the images. It’s a bit long; not sure if there’s a better way to do that.

This is an awesome upload. We need to uncover as much of the Japanese software library as possible, as a LOT of great software and most of the greatest games of all time are Japanese, regardless of platform. So it'd be great to uncover what all Japan had to offer for the Mac over the years.

This is an epic addition!
