Autostart 9805-B - Thanks, I've replaced the 3rd DL "install_w.img.sit" with a Virex cleaned copy.

[Edit] Just adding a little info about the "Autostart 9805" worm. The following is quoted from a 1998 blog:

To be more precise, Autostart-9805 is not actually a virus; it is the very first Macintosh worm. Autostart-9805 takes advantage of a feature in QuickTime 2.0 and later that enables CD-ROMs to start a program immediately upon insertion. (In QuickTime 2.5 and later, the QuickTime Settings control panel lets the user disable this feature.) The worm only operates on a PowerPC system running the Mac OS, and will only infect a computer that's running QuickTime 2.0 or later with the CD-ROM AutoPlay feature enabled.

Autostart-9805 is definitely malicious. About every thirty minutes, it searches mounted volumes for files whose names end with "data", "cod", or "csa" and whose data forks are larger than 100 bytes, or files ending with "dat" that are larger than about 2 MB. When it finds such a file, the worm overwrites approximately the first 1 MB of the data fork with garbage.

Excerpt: Disinfectant Doesn't Disinfect Any More

So... if anyone has used the 3rd download's installer from this page on a PPC Mac before it was cleaned and replaced, you may want to check over your system with Virex or some other tool that recognizes and removes this worm.

Warning...there is malware present on at least one of these installer disks install_w.img.sit.

I know the 5.1a patcher is okay as I double checked it (since I uploaded it), but we should probably clean that up. The Autostart 9805-B is what go flagged. Virex (with the last defs) should pick it up and remove it properly though.

Mike, it's been a minute and then some, but from what I still vaguely remember from MS Office back in the nineties, 5.1 only had six disks, but 5.1a had an extra disk, at least for the International English and the Spanish versions, which were the ones I frequented the most.

That still leaves us with the U.S. English version up in the air, unless someone remembers the disk-count for that version of 5.1a.

Hi krausjxotv. I have the boxed set of Ms Word 5.1a, which has 7 disks in the set. I was going to upload it some time back but saw there was a 5.1a already here in that 3 - 5 page, so left it as that.

I don't know if the 7th disk is due to it being 5.1a or due to my set being for International English as opposed to US English, as the copies here appear to be. My copy installs the US English Word 5.1a application, but instead of US English dictionaries, it installs Australian English dictionaries and UK English Grammar. The install process installs from the 7th "Grammar" floppy disk, but I use pre-made disk images to perform the installation and load all images in Disk Copy 6, so don't know if it would ask for this disk otherwise. I should install it the slow way to find out, I suppose.

I'm thinking tho' that the Word 3 - 5 page could quietly disappear, contents separated, and anything complete (5.1a) kept, as there are already several separate pages here for 3, 4, 5, 5.1, 5.1a, etc, for English and other languages.

I see that the Dutch version of Word 5.1a has 7 disks in it's set, so maybe it's a 5.1a thing and doesn't apply to 5.1 after all.

Huh, interesting.

When I downloaded Word 3 - 5 and expanded it using StuffIt Expander 5.5 the contents were Microsoft Word 3.01.img, installed copies of Word 4.0 and Word 5.0, and a folder Word 5.1a containing six disk images.

When I ran the installer for Word 5.1 it did not ask for a disk 7. I have two copies of Word 5.1 that both have just 6 disks.

Nice for including the full set here

Not quite a full set.

Word 5.1 was a 7 disk set, and the above 6 disk download is missing the "Grammar" disk that accompanied this set.

The Word 5.1 disk set on the Word 3 - 5 page, includes the same number of images as what's in the above #1 download.

An exception being, the 5.1 disks on the other page are for "Word 5.1a", the bug-fixed release that came after the 5.1 release. Word 5.1a is the version the old time Mac Word users preferred using over Word 6.0 when that was released.

Nice for including the full set here as I think we were missing that in the Word 3-5.1a page.
