In what appears to be an irony now, Microsoft and Apple's early history was a symbiotic relationship that launched two great icons of computing: Microsoft Office and the Apple Macintosh. In the mid-1980s, Microsoft's earlier spreadsheet Multiplan was getting stomped by Lotus 1-2-3 on MS-DOS, and Apple was trying to convince the world that the Mac was a serious business computer. Excel launched as a Mac exclusive on 30 September 1985, eventually migrating to the new Windows platform with version 2.05 in November 1987.
