Magic Square is a music composition tool for 12-tone or "dodecaphonic" music. It was programmed to automatically deduce complete matrixes (or "magic squares") based on any arbitrary 12-tone row.

Dodecaphonism is a serialist composition technique developed by Arnold Schoenberg in the beginning of the 20th century and which was utilized by the so-called "Second Viennese School" (consisting of Schoenberg and his students, Alban Berg and Anton Webern, among others). The technique dominated academic music composition instruction for several decades, and is still taught in university to varying degrees to this day.

You may select a tone row from one of several drop-down menus representing a number of composers who utilized the technique, or you may specify your own. Useful for cheating on your upper-level music theory exams...

David Rakowski was a composer and professor at Stanford University when he programmed Magic Square using Microsoft Basic. For more information on 12-tone music, click here.
