MacWrite II

Claris formed in 1987 and re-released the existing versions of the Apple products under their own name. Initially it seemed Claris was as uninterested in developing MacWrite as Apple had been. Several minor upgrades were released to allow MacWrite to run on newer versions of the classic Mac OS, but few other problems were addressed.

Things changed in the later 1980s with the introduction of MacWrite II. The main changes for this release were an updated user interface, a number of new "style" capabilities, and the inclusion of the Claris file translator technology, XTND. MacWrite II was the first really new version of the software, and was based on a word processing engine purchased from Quark, Inc.

By 1989 Word already dominated the Mac with about 60% market share, but the introduction of MacWrite II changed things dramatically; by 1990 Word had dropped to about 45% of the market, and MacWrite had risen to about 30%. This seemed to demonstrate that it would be worth developing further, but Claris did not respond quickly with updated versions.

Microsoft, on the other hand, did, and soon introduced Word 4.0. MacWrite's share once again started to erode.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k

The Complete set (2nd DL above) runs very well on Basilisk II running SSW 7.1.1, also runs fine on Mini vMac, SSW 6.0.8 - SSW 7.1.

Interesting "Help" system. The HyperCard v1.x Engine is built into MacWrite II. The Help file itself is a Stack and the MacWrite II 1.1v2 Help system can open external HyperCard v1.x Stacks with limited User Levels available.

The Claris Help System now supports cut and paste operations from within the MacWrite II Help System or from any HyperCard stack.

To open a HyperCard stack from within the Help system:

  1. Choose Help from the Apple menu to open the MacWrite II Help System.
  2. Press Command-M to display the Message box.
  3. Type "Go" (no quotation marks) in the Message box and press Return.
The "Where is ?" dialog box appears.
  4. Locate the stack you want to open.
  5. Select the name and click OK.

The optional MacWrite II Thesaurus works well in SSW 6. - In SSW 7 it still works, but is clumsy to use.

Bought a PowerBook 550c and it has an installation of MacWrite II-J 1.0v1 - I’ll upload it shortly Smile It also has a large amount of Japanese Claris software on the HD and I’ll work on the uploads for those too.

@macjames: You could add it (the Spanish version). I've added international dictionaries above, which includes the Spanish dictionary for MW II.

I could also upload version 1.1 but it's in spanish, and no extra files, just the application, is it worth it?
