Welcome to EINet MacWeb, your Macintosh vehicle for browsing the World Wide Web and navigating the EINet Galaxy.

MacWeb is an early web browser first released on May 31, 1994. I believe it was the 3rd browser ever developed for the Mac, and would even run on B&W compact Macs.

I found 1.00A1 on a hard drive recovered from a broken Mac LC II. After testing it I searched for other versions on the web and found 0.98a, 1.1.1E1, and 2.0, along with a patch to upgrade 2.0 to 2.0c. All uploads are simple StuffIt archives because none of the versions I found were original disk images.

I've tested MacWeb on a Performa 6300 running System 7.5, a PowerBook PDQ running Mac OS 9.2, and SheepShaver 2.3 running Mac OS 9.

* I could connect to the Internet and load simple web pages with all versions. (Forget anything modern. I uploaded some simple Claris Home Page files to a server for testing.)

* Versions earlier than 2.0 cannot resolve URLs using modern DNS servers. You have to use the server IP address.

* Versions earlier than 2.0 cannot render JPEGs.

* Links do not work in versions earlier than 2.0. For some reason MacWeb inserts two periods in the URL. If you copy the link (hold down the mouse button on the link to get a popup) and correct the problem, you can paste it in the URL bar and it will work.

* The pages render with no or limited styling. 2.0 is the best here.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC

I can't seem to find an official requirements list in any of the documentation. I believe all versions require a Mac Plus or higher. Based on my testing System 7.5 - Mac OS 9.2 all work. I can confirm from sources online that System 7 works, but I have no idea about System 6.

Two of the archives, 1.00a3.2 & 1.1.1E1, have a PPC build. But all versions will run on Power Macs.

0.98a 68K - Min RAM 2MB / Preferred RAM 2MB

1.00A2 68K - Min RAM 700K / Preferred RAM 2MB

1.1.1E1 68K - Min RAM 750K / Preferred RAM 2MB

1.1.1E1 PPC - Min RAM 1.5MB / Preferred RAM 2.5MB

2.0 68K - Min RAM 1MB / Preferred RAM 2MB

Added 1.00ALPHA3.2 (68k & PPC builds) to the mix. This was the (68k) version I used on a Macintosh SE, way back when this was my only PC...
