Macromedia Director is a multimedia application authoring platform. It allows users to build applications built on a movie metaphor, with the user as the "director" of the movie. Originally designed for creating animation sequences, the addition of a scripting language called Lingo made it a popular choice for creating CD-ROMs and standalone kiosks and web content using Adobe Shockwave. Adobe Director supports both 2D and 3D multimedia projects.
   - excerpt adapted from Wikipedia.

Before there was Flash, there was Shockwave! Afterburner for Director allows Director files to play over the Internet using Shockwave for Director. Shockwave brings the multimedia age to your web page.

Better performance
On average Director 5 is 50% faster than Director 4.0.4. In unpublished studies done by Macromedia, in some cases Director 5 is 300 to 900% faster! Now files load and run faster giving your end user a better multimedia experience.

A brand new plug-in API allows developers to extend Director's functionality further than XObjects could. Developers can create custom in-house code that plugs into Director to keep a competitive edge. Xtras such as MPEG import, QuickDraw 3D, and database support ship with Director 5.

Lingo debugger
New Debugger and Watcher Windows allow user to easily step through Lingo scripts to find errors. No need to throw your hands up and pray to Jasik Debugger for the ability to trace through your scripts.

Import RTF documents and render anti-aliased text
Director 5 allows Rich Text Format (RTF) import and has an all new anti-aliased text feature to make text look better on screen. No need to roundtrip to a separate bitmap editor to scrub pixels out of your text, much less the one that comes with Director.

Photoshop filter support
Filters add a new level of support to Director's Paint window. Why take the time to go to Photoshop for some nice clouds or your favorite KPT filter?

Multiple casts
Multiple casts allow users to create templates in Director and easily change content or create content libraries. No need to restrict your Director projects to a single internal cast and share assets using the special SHARED.DIR movie.

Macromedia Open Architecture (MOA)
Underpinning the new Xtra plug-in API, MOA creates a shared look and feel between Macromedia apps, and allows developers a new level of custom functionality. Developers can now create custom Xtras, transitions and filters with APIs shared with Authorware 3.5, FreeHand 5.5, xRes 3, and SoundEdit 16 2.

New grid and alignment features
Brand new alignment tools in Director allow media assets on stage to be perfectly positioned.

Onion Skinning Views
Users can now create traditional animation in Director's Paint window. Onion Skinning allows you to view a graphic while drawing changes in movement on a thin layer above the previous graphic.

Improved Print Support and Database Support
Includes the PrintOMatic Xtra and the File Flex database in the box, addressing user requests for better printing and a "real" database.

@TanatOS: Thanks. Same goes for running this on Basilisk II (Help not working from Help menu). Your workaround for Help works well and the program itself seems to work OK.

@TanatOS: I made a more "Mac Friendly" copy of what was here and added it to the page, 2nd DL above. You can either extract it on SheepShaver using Stuffit Expander (then Disk Copy 6.x to mount), or by using the UnArchiver (unar.exe) on your host PC and then add the extracted image file as a hard drive in SheepShaver's GUI.

The original archive above had been preinstalled, its not an installer. So I don't know if anything is missing (stuff that may have been installed to the System Folder like fonts, etc). Good Luck.

Host is Win7, so no sharing in classic Mac concept. Drag'n'drop directly to ShipShaver don't support. Dragging unzipped folders from in GUI mounted Windows disk C within emulator has no effect. Any idea?

extract it to the desktop and share the desktop. try to pull the file into the emulation via drag n drop/clipboard. i would go any route.
