Sorry for the delay in getting back to you @24bit, I forgot about it for a while.
The first thing I did was to copy the files out of the toast image on my Mac and onto a flash drive to transfer them to my PC. Then I used the PC to install a minimal system for the PB 160 onto a 1.4-MB floppy image in Mini vMac, customize it a bit (i.e. add items such as the Control Strip) using HFVExplorer, and then write that image to an actual 1.4-MB floppy disk using a special program and an external drive (my PC doesn't have an internal FDD). The PB booted from it fine, and still does.
Also, though, I have another problem. I don't have the original power adapter, and the only ones I have around that would work (one of which I'm using to power the laptop) have an output of 12 volts. Compared to the original adapter's output of 7.5 volts, the output voltage of those is rather uncomfortably high. I looked around on the web for a power adapter with the correct output voltage (preferably OEM), but most of the ones I found were $70-$80 on average, and I don't have that kind of money. Can anyone point me to a reliable source that would have the correct adapter for more like half to three-quarters of that price? If so, thank you very much.
Great you got things sorted out.
Sounds like a plan to try whether the PB boots at all before handing out money for spare parts.
You will know that you can write the desired images to a 1.4MB USB floppy drive with DiskUtility up to OSX 10.5. - a virtual machine running Leopard will do too.
Also you may use dd from the Terminal to write images to floppy.
Last not least Basilisk II build 142 for Windows writes Mac HD floppies fine.
All seven 7.1 images from the toast can be written to floppy flawlessly.
For booting your PB, "InstallMeFirst" is enough, it should boot and take you to the OS installer
If you have issues writing the floppies, best start a new thread about it.
I have a PowerBook 160 that needs a hard drive, but I want to boot it up from a floppy before I find a new hard drive or adapter, so what I'd like are the 160-specific images, if anyone can provide them. (By the way, I found the PB next to a Dumpster at my school; possibly the broken HDD was why the previous owner put it there. I'm glad I was able to save it.
) I found a specs webpage that said it originally ran 7.1; that's why I'm wondering if anyone has 7.1 rather than 7.5.
I have a Mac Mini desktop; I'll try extracting the file on that next.

EDIT (8:00 PM PST): It extracted fine on the Mac Mini; I must not have the right program on my PC to extract it. Also, the toast image opened natively on the Mac, I didn't have to change the extension at all. Thanks!
On my side, the zip expands to a toast image.
Toast can be renamed to ISO and may be burned to CD with e.g. IMGBurn in Windows.
Do you need all 7.1 images or merely the two PB160 specials?
Hello,
I have a PC running Windows 10 that I download this kind of old software to (either to be used in an emulator or to be used with my PowerBook 160). When I downloaded the "Special_Installers_7.1.zip," I opened the unzipped file (I forget exactly, but I think it was a .bin file) with a program called PowerISO. When I opened it, the folder inside the archive that was supposed to contain the installer disk images apparently was empty. So, (1) What's going on with that, and (2) Could someone provide me with another upload of it that does include the disk images (the specific ones I need are for the PowerBook 160)?
If anyone can re-upload this, thank you.

Can someone please upload the individual software titles from the Performa floppy restore images?
http://macintoshgarden.org/forum/system-71-performa-bundles
Instructions on how to restore the Performa system in SoftMac aren't working for me, and I really just want to peek inside at the programs that came bundled with them. Not all are uploaded here and I would like to see a separate Performa Apps page with the titles listed individually.
Thanks very much in advance.
@romulus: There appear to be more than one set of (zipped) floppy disk images on this page that are not recoverable - in that they cannot be written back to floppy media, nor mounted onto a desktop by using normal means (Disk Copy, Disk Dup+, ShrinkWrap, etc).
They can be mounted however, by unzipping on a host PC, and dragging the images into a running Mini vMac window and accessed then.
But if you want images that can be used on other systems and by other means, then you may need to look elsewhere.
System Update 3.0 used to be available from Apple, now its only available from various mirror sites. You can DL working images of System Update 3.0 here (both 1.4MB & 800K images).
Has anyone else found the SYSUPD3_71.ZIP (System 3.0 Update .image files) are not working?
Okay. I will make it soon.
Hi Fortuna Wave.
If you feel like going the extra mile, you might consider putting links into the relevant parts of the description for the files that you upload to the internal server. That will make it really easy for anyone to immediately access what they want. On the other hand, if you don't feel like doing it, it is no matter as the files are there for all to see.
Great to see these files back again.
ALL the links are dead... a greasemonkey script tried them all
IIGS_User: You don't need to delete this page. It has some kind of information. I have placed all placeholders before someone will make a mirror.
Most of the mirrors are dead, so I think it's the easiest way to delete this page?
There's a lot of PlainTalk versions on the July 1997 SW Updates CD, you can find it here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?1tzt9p24d2hyq
FYI for Mac OS 7.1 for Quadra 660AV & 840AV v1.2, Disk Copy refused to mount "PlainTalk 4", saying it had a bad checksum. I got around this by doing a custom install omitting Text-to-Speech and Speech Recognition, then afterward installing the latest version of PlainTalk from http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html.
Edit: Replaced 'xxx 7' by 'Mac OS 7' - IIGS User
This is nothing but a pointless duplication of what I already uploaded, plus redundant and unnecessary installers. The only unique one is the version of 7.1.2 for the LC 630 which isn't covered by the full installer, and honestly you could just as easily install 7.5 on that one.
I wash my hands of this. If someone else wants the site to be complicated and hard to search and understand, go for it.
