MacHTTP is a webserver designed to run on Mac OS versions 7.x through 9.x. It was written by software developer Chuck Shotton and was originally shareware; it is now available in source code form from SourceForge.net under the Perl Artistic License. The current version is 2.6.1. It is still used on some older Macintosh hardware. It was later commercialized as WebSTAR, sold originally by StarNine and later bought by Quarterdeck Software.

The program runs on Mac OS X under the Classic Environment, but has not been ported to run natively on X (though an attempt was apparently underway in 2003 to do so). Its functionality has been replaced with an OS X port of the Apache web server.

MacHTTP supports the Common Gateway Interface standard for generating dynamic content, as well as Apple Events for scriptability.

why does the release date of the WebSTAR suite predate this software by a good five years?

I remember using MacHTTP in the early to mid 1990's when it was around version 2.2

I think that the code was available for the author Chuck Shotton, to ressurect MacHTTP once StarNine's WebSTAR interests were handed through several companies after the Quarterdeck purchase of StarNine.
See TidBits article of 2001.

The description in the DL page above, could be reworded for clarification.

If it was "later commercialized as WebSTAR" then why does the release date of the WebSTAR suite predate this software by a good five years?
