Tenon Intersystems |
MachTen is a Unix-like operating system from Tenon Intersystems. It is based on 4.4BSD and the Mach kernel, and features the X Window System and GNU programming tools. It runs only as a classic Mac OS application program (in a virtual machine) on Apple Macintosh computers.
MachTen development started in 1989, culminating in the first release in 1991. The Professional MachTen branch, intended for 68000-based Macintoshes, ended with release 2.3. The Power MachTen branch, which is Power Macintosh compatible, lacks some of the features of Professional MachTen (including true virtual and protected memory models), but takes full advantage of the PowerPC processor and is compatible with Mac OS 9 through its final version, 4.1.4. MachTen is no longer developed, and is functionally superseded by Mac OS X.

Cameron Kaiser, author of TenFourFox himself, was also unable to reach them for a couple of years now. And shockingly, it seems a bit before then, there were plans to "open source" MachTen... wow...
I wonder what happened?
Cameron Kaiser's FLoodgap site as some very interesting pages on MachTen and building stuff on it :

Gives you an idea.
Like for building WindowMaker or GNUstep, I think you'd need XORG dev tools (and many other things), Which don't know its even in MachTen.
@galgot
I see. Figured that might be the case when I saw the term "Live CD".
As for dependencies, I believe it would be possible to search for much older versions of them. But yes, without a pre-made setup, the only way to try this out would be to install them one by one and see how it goes...
I think these GNUstep live cds are build atop Linux distro, Debian. While MachTen is more based on a Unix BSD i think ? So that makes different. Maybe GNUstep could theorically be build from sources on MachTen, but that would involve building tons of more too recent dependencies and develloping tools for MachTen to handle, me think.
Even building a full GNUstep environment on a recent Linux distro is not that trivial and certainly not just "click to install", for me anyway, when i last did it 2 - 3 years ago...
Incidentally, has anyone ever tried installing/using GNUSTEP 1.8 for PPC under MachTen? (CD Install here)
Not sure what the exact requirements/steps would be, if even possible, but I wonder...
Yes, I also emailed them (Dec, 2020) and have had as yet, no reply.
I think that it is abandoned and that the final version above requires an activation code to be supplied.
Mmhh… tenon updates ftp page have been archived once in 2002 :
https://web.archive.org/web/20020718233930/http://ftp.tenon.com/pub/upda...
But all files seems broken :/ Too bad, there was even an SSH for XTen-6 in there.
I just noticed their FTP is also dead when trying to get their OpenGL installer for MachTen, which is mentioned here. Did anyone back up "Tenon.OpenGL.Installer.hqx" while it was available? The page didn't make it sound like it was included with MachTen 4.1.x... It should be uploaded to this page if found, I think.
Tenon really seems gone, as far as I can tell.
I emailed them near the beginning of 2020 and never got a response. I think they're totally defunct. I hope somebody eventually cracks it or posts a serial.
I decided to test that theory out. Sent them an e-mail a week ago, asking if they still sell it, and if so, for how much, but no response. Seems abandoned to me... But maybe we should wait a bit longer.
The web page from Tenon Intersystems (http://www.tenon.com/products/machten/411-info.shtml) is dated year 2013. The purchase link does not work. I bet they would not response if you send email to them. It may considered as dead commercial.
You need to go 4.1.4 to get OS 9 compatibility. But apparently vers 4.1.4 is still a $99 purchase from Tenon Intersystems, in which case we would not host a serial key for that version here.
But you'd think there would be a working one floating around somewhere.
thanks man. i never got 4.0.3 to work, 4.1 is much easier but alas, no registration code..
One that's known. But not tried by me and I also don't know if any of the DL's already contain it in their archives. HTH
For v4.0.3
code: 250238
could someone pleeeease upload a license for this? this is highly intriguing stuff, and it's kind of obvious when something is abandonware if the only OS it runs on has been out of support for more than 15 years, not to mention the official site's 'order' page throws a mySQL error.. yes, i honestly wanted to buy it if the price is reasonable lol.
It seems as if the serial "
1-5-11-3ffff826c-232147-95-4WT" works for 4.1.4.EDIT: no, it actually doesn't complain about it in the change license menu but complains if you try to boot again.
Does anyone have a license for this? As far as I've been able to tell, Tenon is totally defunct and this is abandonware.
It is an OS within a virtual machine. The virtual machine literally boots into it. Nothing about it is an emulator: it is all 100% natively run.
You can still technically call it an utility, though, if you believe we can call virtual machines in general "utilities", since they are all programs run under a host OS.
Although this *is* an OS, a part of me wants to classify it as an emulator or utility since you can't boot into it.
I got it from MacsRUS, I just uploaded this stuff. I checked again against what I got from him. If it is corrupt, it must have been so in his archive already. Should we remove it or does someone knows a kind of way to repair it ?
The archive MachTen_4.0.3.sit is damaged. Error message is "The integrity of the data fork of "web2" could not be verified"
OK, I added it ! Now it is complete !
Very nice work kitch. But I'm _definitely_ not going to load this one up in Sh/Sh !!
- looks like it would be tricky to get going.
Can your append your current request to MacsRUS , to include
MachTEN 4.0 îƒ.sit
he accidently missed it out from my MachTEN requests a few days ago.
Hope that's OK - Don't want to hassle him for just one file , and I haven't had chance to put together a substantial list of my own yet , Cheers.
I have added MachTen 4 from MacsRUS's archive.
