For Power PC. This is handy with older burners and the classic mac. Besides other features, the disk caching benefits slower-speed CD-ROM drives.

What Does CD-ROM ToolKit Do?

CD-ROM ToolKit provides a high-performance CD-ROM device driver that enables your
system to see and communicate with your CD-ROM drives and mount a wide variety of
CD formats to your Desktop. CDT’s device driver gives you access to all the most popular
CD formats:

• Kodak Photo CD™
• Macintosh HFS
• Enhanced CDs, including CD Extra™ (formerly known as CD Plus) and Active
Audio™-type CDs
• ISO 9660
• CD+G (CD-ROM with graphics, also known as CD Karaoke)
• High Sierra
• ProDOS (with suitable software)
• Video CD (with suitable software)

CDT provides “on-the-fly” driver loading in the event that you are required to start up
your system with extensions off. Most CD-ROM device drivers load at startup with system
extensions. Starting up with extensions off can temporarily disable your CD-ROM
drive because no driver is loaded. You can use CDT to “hot-load” a CD-ROM device
driver and consequently gain access to otherwise unmountable CDs.

Additionally CDT offers a number of ways of speeding up information retrieval from
CDs. It does this with a process called “caching.”

Enhancements to CD-ROM ToolKit v4.0 from previous versions:

• MP3 playback and extraction.
• Supports CD-ROM drives housed in PowerBook Media Bays (e.g., PB3400 and G3 PowerBooks).
• Batch AIFF extraction feature in CDT Remote.
• New HTML based on-line help.
• Various improvements in user interface.
• Supports Mac OS 9.0.
• New CDTcache settings--CD-ROM ToolKit contains pre-set cache settings for more CDs than the earlier versions.
• Adds support for more devices (see the Supported Devices file included with this release).
• Fixes compatiblity problem with virtual memory and ATAPI drives.
• Fixes caching on HFS Plus volumes incompatibility.

Known issues:

• CDT does not support DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM drives. FWB Software is currently working on enabling the DVD-ROM features of CDT.

• CDT does not currently support playback of audio CD's on the iBook. FWB will address the problem in a future release.

• Higher speed drives, such as 8X and above, may not benefit from disk caching.

Architecture: PPC

CD-ROM ToolKit 4.0 requires the following hardware and system software:
• Power Macintosh
• a SCSI or ATAPI CD-ROM drive
• System 8.1 or better
• eight megabytes of RAM or greater, more is helpful
• one to three megabytes of free, contiguous hard disk space for disk
caching, more is helpful

I have been trying to update this version to 4.0.1, and then to 4.0.1b but i get an error and can't apply that last update. I tried the update on several macs running OS versions from 8.1 to 8.6, with no luck. Unfortunately the update to 4.0.1b has the support to my strange unit (plextor px-w124ts). Anyone by any chance has the 4.0.1 retail installer?

It's handy for me Smile

I wasn't able to get an old Sony CDU-8012 drive working in 9.2.2 with the 7.6 "universal" driver (wrong volume sizes and asking me to initialize/eject) but it works fine with this.

Might have spoken too soon as after a reboot it now won't mount any discs. The extension has a question mark on it during startup.

I'm not planning on testing this; I have no need of it. But it looks like it could be handy for someone who might need it, so it's going into the Old Mac Archive.

Anytime, MCP.

I'm still evaluating this software and I'd be interested in what you think, after you've tested it. I really like the other FWB and am hoping that FWB-CDT is just as good.

Could someone use OS 10.3 or later to unzip this file and re-archive it in some other format? I only have 10.2 and I'm unable to do anything with it.
